Conference Interpreting

So far the book is exactly what I needed. I live in a country that is completely unregulated when it comes to conference interpreting and my intention is to use this as an aid for my future conferences. Thanks!

Valerie Taylor-Bouladon's book continues to fill an important niche in the market, as it presents a very practical approach with plenty of useful information for newcomers to the profession. As a teacher of translation and interpreting in a university programme, I can recommend it to students as a comprehensive guide and reference to complement their more theoretical studies.

After reading the previous review by DD Ayuso I wonderd if I had read the same book. I am not an interpreter but used the book to research background for a proposed novel.As a lay person I found the book to be easy to read, full of interesting and valuable anecdotes, and, a suprising element in what I thought might be a dry read - Humour!Hats off to the author for an informative, practical, hands on guide for budding interpreters!

As an international conference attendee and having just read the ThirdEdition of this book (re-edited and updated to 2011), I find that it iscertainly a hands-on guide for student interpreters, conference organizersand also for those attending as delegates. The guidance given in this bookpertaining to the conduct of conferences explains what should be expectedfrom professional interpreters and a well-run conference

Ms Taylor-Bouladon's book gives sound practical advice for the aspiring interpreter. I found the section on preparation of personal glossaries particularly useful. This well thought out coverage considers not only the practical semantics of translating but importantly touches on the emotional and cultural factors involved in this very complex field. Readable as well as practical!

This should have been a much better book. The author is clearly a highly experienced and competent conference interpreter, but this written guide to her profession was sorely in need of some serious editing before it was put on sale to the public. _Conference Interpreting: Principles and Practice_ is full of typos and repetition (e.g. the same sentence twice on one page, a paragraph repeated verbatim in different chapters), and it's sometimes unnerving how Ms Taylor-Bouladon leaves us hanging with incomplete examples/anecdotes. For example, she stresses the importance of body language, illustrating it by the supposed difference in meaning between a Spaniard pointing to his eye and a Frenchman doing the same thing -- but then fails to tell us what that difference is!Being an interpreter myself, I found some useful and entertaining information here, but the poor presentation would probably make this book not as interesting to people new to the subject (its main target market). I would recommend that students and beginning interpreters try James Nolan's _Interpretation: Techniques and Exercises_ instead.

Thus book is badly written, badly edited, confusingly organised and rather dated. It has the merit of containing all the thoughts and advice of one conference interpreter with a distinguished carrier. I picked up a few interesting ideas and pointers by slogging through the disparate and subjective content.

Lenguaje muy claro. Muy buena información y consejos para intérpretes principiantes y estudiantes. Aunque no es suficiente para enseñar esta materia en universidad. Le haría falta una sección de ejercicios prácticos.
