Excellent book for Korean cooking
Maangchi's first book is one of my most used books. We became fans of Korean cooking when we lived in Korea for 3 years. Coming back to the states there weren't a lot of Korean cookbooks back then (late 90s) the surge of Korean offerings has been wonderful, some better than others. One of the most helpful parts of this book are pages 18-35, ingredient explanations, and pictures! so you can snap a picture of what you want to buy with your phone, go into a Market, and compare items on the shelf, or show a worker to get help. The recipes are laid out with an introduction to the recipe, ingredients, and directions. there are wonderful pictures of finished recipes and sometimes techniques. Some ingredients you will need an Oriental market and possibly the internet. We are blessed in new orleans with wonderful markets but it can be a bit challenging elsewhere. We get toasted Gim (nori, seaweed) and it's expensive, but the basic sheets are cheap. The recipe for toasting these is wonderful. I'm not the biggest fan of fish cakes, but my husband gets them, he likes to just pan fry them. the stir fried fish cake recipe (page 248) gave me a reason to like them too. It elevated them from squishy funny tasting bland frozen globs to a really tasty dish. Her seafood scallion pancake is just like what we'd get from vendors on the streets of pusan (or busan, depends on the map) so good. And what could be easier, or tastier, than garlicky cooked soybean sprouts? crispy pop in your mouth sprouts with wonderful garlic flavor.I have a couple of favorite korean cookbooks, and more than a few I donated after trying a few recipes. This one will be my kitchen companion and become as stained and well loved as her first book.

Even better than I expected!!!
What a gorgeous, user-friendly cookbook. Maangchi’s inviting warmth exudes from every page, and the recipes and tips are exceptional and easy to follow. Excellent photos of everything, including her shopping/ingredient guide (maybe my favorite part of the book). Her personal stories throughout were an especially nice touch and really bring each dish to life. I heartily recommend this to everyone I know. Thank you, Maangchi.

Actually pretty good for…
Actually this is pretty good for someone (like myself) who’s a vegetarian aka vegan. She actually gives an ok amount of vegetable and soy dishes options.Of course I wouldn’t recommend this to any vegan because majority of it is meat and fish, but if you are interested in well explained Korean foods and I would say simplified, then this may be right for you.She gives a decent amount of vegetable options though. I was mostly interested in the sauces and the marinates (the marinated meant for the meats, I would try it on seitan or jackfruit or tofu minus the fish sauce or whatever). I think some stuff I can actually make it into something great and vegan. Now I have not tried any of the recipes yet, but there are some recipes that I watched on YouTube that’s in here and very well explained and detailed. I do make a vegan version of her kimchi and always Maangchi’s version never goes too crazy, or goes bad or is too salty. I do have another Korean recipe book, but it’s not as good or well explained as this one and it’s way more complicated!I will be experimenting with some of the vegetable recipes. Maybe do a Korean bbq with some homemade seitan. I do appreciate that she does consider us veg heads. There are a few things she could have left out but this is the “big book of Korean cooking” so why not add them in. I was not sure if this book would be useful to me, but I’m pleasantly surprised (just have to ignore some of the animal meat parts).I already ordered some Perilla seeds to grow.-in the cover foto, the yellow and green labels are actually veg or vegan. The blue tags and pink I think I may be able to make plantbased. Also she does dedicate a section to Korean Buddhist temple, which happens to be vegan yay! The recipes aren't as exciting as some of the other recipes, but there are a few that I will try. How fun… (๑>◡<๑)

Really good recipes!!
The book itself is AMAZING. I've made the vegan kimchi from her website so many times that I decided I should just buy the book and I'm very happy I did. Definitely going to try more recipes from Maangchi! The only thing.. and it is a small thing.. the book arrived damaged! I don't feel like it's damaged enough to send back but I wish that I had purchased it in person where I could check the condition before buying.
