Stupidly good, maybe best in this price range
I've thrown a lot of music at these since they arrived, and most of it sounds full, expansive, and rich. The tweeters are capable of dog whistle highs and there is plenty of mid and low range punch. This is in a dedicated two channel setup plugged into a Bluesound Powernode. Back them away from the wall or you'll choke the bass response. These look so well finished with the machined aluminum rings for the speaker mounts up front it's a shame to leave the covers on them. They are also quite heavy for their size which I'm sure is good for damping resonance. I have two other systems, one stereo, one surround, and these little dudes, at the listening volume I enjoy, challenge my decision to buy floor standing towers for those systems. With a pair of these, maybe some stands and a nice turntable and amp you'll be very pleased. I know these have been around forever and reviewed to death but honestly, not enough praise can be heaped on these mighty mite gems. Well done Wharfedale.

Lacking in bass response.
I recently purchased these speakers after having read dozens of reviews for both these and other comparably priced speakers. And to be fair, the majority of the reviews for the Wharfedale's were very positive. But while I think that they have a very clear and quite beautiful mid range and high end, the bass is virtually non-existent, which is simply not acceptable to me. I have had them for about 2 weeks now and really, really want to like them, but the I cannot talk myself in believing that their lack of bass response is acceptable. Unfortunately, they will be going back and my search for a good bookshelf speaker under $500 will continue.

No bass
The reviews said that the lows were good for this bookshelf but still very thin for my taste. My ears are still tuned for old school advents, so I had to send them back. Sorry

Warm and open and not overly bright
Speaker reviews are necessarily subjective. That said, I run these from a powered Hsu Labs subwoofer, and they work marginally as the satellites. With their 6-ohm impedance and 86 db sensitivity, the subwoofer tends to overwhelm them. I am satisfied with them, but the subwoofer is turned almost all the way down. You can bypass the built-in crossover, and if you don't, you need to be careful of the external clips that connect both pairs of binding posts to ensure they don't come loose and lose you one of the drivers. It is necessary to bring the speaker wires in from the edge of the speakers and not from the center in order to engage the clips. The speakers are very directional and the high end disappears if you aren't directly in front of the speakers. If you are in the sweet spot, the sound is warm and open but not overly bright, and I never get listener fatigue.

Budget Audiophile
These speakers are perfect for budget audiophiles. These are for our U-Turn Orbit turntable and are powered by an 80s Realistic amp. They deliver a full, warm sound. You can crank these up without any distortion. I was surprised at how great the lows sound while keeping the mids/highs clear. They pack a nice punch to be relatively inexpensive bookshelf speakers. They also look great (especial without the covers).VERY pleased with these speakers! Our vinyl has never sounded better.

Good, except for piano
Although these speakers are highly praised, I can't count myself among the admirers. They fail miserably when reproducing solo piano such as the sonatas of Scarlatti or the partitas & suites of J. S. Bach, or even Chopin. It's a shame that speakers that look as good as these and are as mechanically solid have this problem. I have searched everywhere for similar reports but have found none. Apparently you'll only hear about this from me.The tweeter makes a scratchy distortion when driven at moderate volume with solo piano. Something isn't right with it and perhaps the factory has had a bad run of them (this review was written in early 2014). If you can at all audition them be sure to take with you a piano recording that runs the range of soft and slow to loud and fast -- and listen very closely.

Quality
As another reviewer said, these have lovely low end, obviating the need for a sub.Clear, plenty loud for my small lounge-room. Look lovely. Well built. Lovely warm tone.

BUY THESE SPEAKERS!
BUY THESE SPEAKERS! Beautiful, clean, crisp sound. When I first got these, I had them sitting on the carpeted floor. I was disappointed - the sound was muddled and lacked both top and bottom end. I've since built speaker stands for them that puts the tweeters at "ear height" while seated and sets the back of the speakers about 3" from the wall (important for reflecting sound from the rear ports on the speakers). I've also put felt "feet" on the speakers to allow the cabinets to vibrate more freely without being grounded by the stands. Wow, what a difference! Now, there is good bass response, nice crisp highs and everything in between. These are perfect for us in an apartment - the room is about 12 x 20 with a very tall cathedral ceiling. Not that we'd want to, but we can't crank the music out of respect of our neighbors. These speakers are incredible performers for this set up. If your needs include really loud music, or to fill a very large room, I'm sure there are better choices.
