I have owned four copies of this book and have read it every day since 1994
“Burn the libraries, for their value is in this book,” Emerson said of Plato’s Republic. However, George Seldes had not yet been born and The Great Thoughts has not yet been written. This volume will impart to the reader all wonders of the world’s great thinkers. This is the catechism of the humanities. Take off small morsels daily, perhaps in the room where you rest, for the nourishment and fulfillment of the mind. If you can take but one book to a deserted island, make it How To Build A Boat. If you can take two, take Mr. Seldes’ The Great Thoughts.

Great update from 1985 original but paperback Printer did a poor job
The Great Thoughts are still great, I had purchased the original paperback in 1985 and its one of my favorites but I have to say whoever was the Printer of of this updated paperback version did not replicate the font crispness of the original1985 version. Though of course readable, the font is a little fuzzy and not up to a standard normal quality. You would think after 36 tears the font quality would be equal or even sharper.

This is a most interesting book.
One can open this book to any page and find something to stimulate the thinking and discussion with those around you. I highly recommend it.

Love it!
I bought this book about 30 years ago and am still reading it! The one I ordered from Amazon I gave as a gift to a friend.I love the collection of "the great thoughts", some very wise, some religious, some atheist, some hateful of women or racist. You will not agree with everything, of course not! Yet, the wisdom of the ages deserves a read and a re-read.

Not what I expected
The selections seemed random and not all were so great. Disappointed.

Put this on top of your toilet tank and every nugget of body lost will be returned in nuggets of wisdom.

"Not Every Thought is A Great Thought." Not every obscure one should be overlooked.
"Not Every Thought is a Great One",but here are some influential, notorious, infamous, and inspiring attempts at transmitting the soul to the written word. Not every heart is a Bright Light for the world to reflect upon. Many of the Dark Hearts live in antiquity. Many of our current Dark Hearts still live in infamy.
