The Outlaw Josey Wales [Blu-ray Book]

One of Eastwood's Best Performances
No question "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is one of Eastwood's best performances. Set at the end of the civil war, Wales sets out to get revenge on the rogue Union soldiers who wantonly slaughter his wife and child, burning down their farm in the process. The casting in this film was excellent, and the plot, though simple, included many twists and turns that you never wanted the movie to end. Being one of the best Western movies I've ever watched, I can't recommend this one enough.

"Not hard to track, leaves dead men wherever he goes."
Those 1847 Walkers make him larger than life. I guess they used cartridge models for shooting, bit safer than cap and ball. Each handgun weights in at 4.6 pounds, and besides that, he carried a couple smaller guns here and there. They say the Colt Walker was the most powerful handgun till the .357 came out in the 1930s. 60 grains of black powder per chamber, yikes. He was the cowboy Dirty Harry.

Clint Eastwood is The Outlaw Josey Wales.......an army of one !
I first saw "The Outlaw Josey Wales" in the theater when it was first released in the summer of 1976,(the bi-centennial year,) I was 20 at the time. Well I'm 66 now and I got it on DVD and I appreciate even more. Clint Eastwood directed and stars in this Civil War era tale as Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose wife and young son are murdered in the very beginning of the film by looting ,pillaging "Red Legs", renegade Union soldiers. He witnesses the massacre of his family and the "Red Legs" burns his home to the ground. He sees the leader of the renegades,(played by Bill McKinney,) and sets out for revenge. Wales joins up with some Confederate soldiers and during the opening credits we see some battles. The movie features a fine supporting cast, especially Chief Dan George, (who was also great in "Little Big Man" from 1970, another great Western in which he was nominated for an "Oscar" for Best Supporting Actor.) And John Vernon as "Fletcher" is really good also. Jerry Fielding's excellent score was nominated for the "Oscar" for Best Original Score, (Jerry Goldsmith won For "The Omen".) Bruce Surtees' beautiful cinematography creates a dark western atmosphere. The movie was a hit at the box-office and received good Nielsen ratings when it was first broadcast on network television. The National Film Registry created by The Library of Congress in 1988 to preserve films it deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" put the flick on the list back in 1996. They add films to the list just about every year. There are only 800 films on the list. Quite an honor. Back in late May, 1992, Eastwood was a guest on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show" during Carson's final week before he retired after 30 years hosting, being "The King of Late Night." David Letterman,(the next king of late night,) and Bob Hope were also on that night. A really entertaining show that Friday night. Carson said he thought "The Outlaw Josey Wales" to be one of his best, Eastwood agreed. The tagline for the movie poster read.... "An Army of One !"

Now Hold Tight So I Can Tell You The Story !.
Did I ever tell you when I went down to Texas ?. Well now, it was a foggy morn when I was furrowing the land with my young son. When all of a sudden I heard the bird's thunder across the sky's above us.. We stopped the horse's as mother was calling us. Why is she calling us I asked ?. Then all of a sudden, I begun to realise that it wasn't thunder from those yon hill's, it was many horse's galloping toward's us. In the dust and the haze I started to realise something wasn't right. I was trampled and fell down a ridge. I then looked up and those blue bellied rider's were torching my house. After a period of time I came too. Was this a dream I am waking up to or is this reality ?. What is going on ?. I was asking !. I will try to tell you as it happened. I got up and talked to some men and we started to ride over the plain's. This is our story. PC. 05. 10. 2018. Now please watch the film !.

One of the last great westerns
Clint at his best, one of my favourite all time films, along with "Unforgiven" one of the last great westerns. Great characters, acted well, with the exception of Sondra Locke. Chief Dan George is a revelation. A fine script with some really memorable lines, especially between Josey and Lone Watie. Any fan of Eastwood or the western genre will love this film, and even after almost forty years it still holds its own as a masterpiece.

One of Eastwood's Best Westerns
This was one of the earlier western made by Clint Eastwood. It could be one of the best films made by Eastwood along side with "Unforgiven".This rugged western about the reluctant outlaw Josey Wales is an epic worthwhile for revisits from time to time.
