Barbarians!
My fifth grader had to do a research paper on Attila the Hun, and this was one of our sources. It was very well written and illustrated. He enjoyed reading the whole book.

Illustrations -- WOW!
This book is amazing. It explores and gives the history of four sets of invaders -- the Goths, the Huns, the Vikings, and the Mongols. It shows you the living styles, battle gear, mythology, art and artifacts for each group, as well as territorial maps. In addition, the book offers insight as to how the barbarian invasions led to change and culture contact, the shifting centers of population, and some of the benefits of all the turmoil. Not too bloody or terrifying; just enough to keep your middle school student interested. This is even ok for younger kids -- certainly the illustrations will captivate them. This is simply a beautiful, well-done book.

Barbarians in Full Color
While studying European history, child friendly books on Goths and Huns are difficult to find. There are some good books on Mongols and plenty on Vikings. This book is colorful, has interesting box inserts of information and explains an easy to follow timeline. The pictures are amazing. Very pleased with this book!
