NOT FOR ADULTS: children under 12 only.
This type of book is perfectly suited for bright and curious young children who are eager to discover the Middle Ages; in this very thin volume they will find lots of brightly colored illustrations and simple enough yet interesting explanations. But the adult will run out of reading materials in minutes (32 pages!), and so will the smart child! If offered jointly with other issues from the same series, it would make for a neat gift package.I had ordered this volume as a gift on the basis of its being on a wish list. It would be best not to offer it singly to any serious adult reader as it would be disappointing. On the computer screen, the glorious book cover is very misleading and Amazon should make it explicit that it is a children's book.

A big surprise!
Ok! I guess I should have read the description of this booklet. Yes I use the word booklet, as it's only 32 pages long. It has drawings in it as well as small & short descriptions of aspects of the plagueof the 14th century. It's more like a booklet for a little kid. It uses simple language to describe a complex subject, but does bring out some good information in short form.

A Good Quick Reference
I used this series of books for a quick and easy reference guide in case there was a little detail I couldn't remember or wasn't sure about. These do the trick!

Medieval Medicine and the Plague
These books in The Medieval World series (there are 20), published by Crabtree Publishing Company, serve myriad purposes. For the intended reading age, 9-12, they present medieval life--very confusing to our contemporary conventions--in a perfectly understandable fashion. For that age range, I could not recommend these books higher. If I'd had such materials when I was younger, I might have ended up as a medieval scholar.Yet they also serve a purpose that the publisher may not have intended, and that is for the casual researcher of medieval life. There are accessible texts for the casual researcher, this is true, but none that I've seen contain simple explanations and diagrams. For example, this book is full of wonderful illustrations that depict: a two-page diagram of Plague Horrors; an Apothecary at work; medical school; and many, many more.Every page in this book (there are 32 pages in every book in the series), is presented in full color, the pages colored to resemble parchment, and the illustrations done to wonderfully evoke the period. The "chapters" included are:Medieval MedicineMedieval DiseasesThe Black DeathPlague HorrorsMedical BeliefsHome RemediesThe ApothecaryDoctorsSurgeonsFemale Doctors (very interesting chapter)HospitalsDeath and BurialGlossary and Index (wonderful to have!)If you're a writer, and you're looking for simple information on what medieval life looked like, this series of books can't be beat. To buy the entire series may be prohibitive, but if you have an idea of exactly what you want, this is a great starting point. My only complaint would have to be that I wish these books were bound together in a single volume. Some of the material overlaps from book to book, and as the books themselves are only 32 pages long, a single volume would run well under 200 pages, I would imagine.

Very informative, beautifully illustrated!
I purchased this book and 8 others in the series for our study of the Middle Ages this year. They are very informative and beautifully illustrated. They are really worth the money (I own the paperback versions). The 9-12 reading level is accurate. Younger children can also benefit from these books especially if they are read to them. LQ.

Good book
I was researching to deliver a lecture on medieval/17th century barbers surgeons and this book provided superb background information. Gory - but good!

Book and service were very good
A great reference without too much academic detail. Exactly what I was looking for, although I suppose it makes for odd bed time reading! Arrived in good condition, as described by the seller. Thank you.
