Not really. It's a cream. I put water on my face and use just a small amount and rub over my face. Then rinse with a wet washcloth. There is just a small amount of lather, but nothing like a shampoo.

Is there a protective foil seal under the lid?

Yes I believe there is. I only order from companies that sell through Amazon with 100% rating. You have to be careful with cosmetics on Amazon because many people complain of fake products.
