Between 1964 and 1966, the original incarnation of the Animals, led by singer Eric Burdon, organist Alan Price, and guitarist Hilton Valentine, charted an impressive string of singles that have made them one of the most enduring of the British Invasion bands. At their best, the Animals made contemporaries like the Rolling Stones sound like boys, thanks to Burdon's emotional and edgy vocals, which always carried a dose of attitude and weary defiance, and backing from a solid R&B and blues combo. Singles like the group's definitive arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun" (via Josh White), the brilliant "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (via Nina Simone), the equally brilliant "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "It's My Life" were frustrated and passionate pleas for freedom and clarity. All of these are collected in this concise ten-track budget set of the so-called Mickie Most years with Columbia and Decca. The Burdon/Price/Valentine version of the Animals called it quits in 1966. It really was the only version of the Animals that truly mattered. The rest of the various Burdon-led combos were merely footnotes, however interesting they may have been. ~ Steve Leggett

Pure Genius!
These guys are genius's at writing songs. I ordered this from Amazon as I have been listening to a classic rock format on my local radio station and they throw an oldie from the 60's in once in a while. I love the Animal's, the Yardbirds etc. and feel they really set the stage for alot of classic rock to come in later years. Part of the British Invasion so to speak. My favorite song on here is It's My Life! This song and the Yardbird's Heart Full Of Soul have that wierd late 60's vibe that I love! Makes me want to buy a fuzz pedal! I like the Zombie's alot too, and of course the Stone's, albeit they are played all the time. These songs are more obscure and have a certain ambiance about them. I've been giving them a listen again and just wanted to comment here. Peace! by Bruce Kerr.

Bought it for The House Of The Rising Sun
I don't know, maybe I need the actual album from then, I really love the song and this copy sounds great. What a sweet song. It's My Life stands out, great. Baby Let Me Take You Home and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and Don't Bring Me Down following second to last, I'm Crying last on my list. Still, I'm really in appreciation of the house of the rising son.
