Long Range Shooting Book.
Not a great book. Really 2 1/2 stars would be more appropriate. Relatively weak on technical information, focused towards stories and ancedotes on people's experiences at long range shooting. Somewhat disappointed.

Not what the title suggests
As someone who plinks with an AR-15, I've often listened in awe to my friends who tell of their days in the desert, ringing steel at 1,000 yards and beyond. Wishing to join them, I would need 2 things - a different rifle, and the know-how to use it. So I bought this book under the impression that, given its title, it would help me learn about long-range shooting. I had all kinds of questions about calibers, barrels, scopes, triggers, loads, etc. When the book arrived, the first thing I did was turn to the index at the back to look up some specific information. Oh, wait. No index. OK, so I'll just read through chapter by chapter and hopefully get answers to my questions. What I found was dozens and dozens of glossy photos, usually of the author in a far-off country mugging beside some dead animal. By way of disclosure, I am not a hunter. I certainly don't mind people hunting for game, as long as they eat what they shoot. Killing an animal just for its horns seems rather amoral to me. Some specifics - the chapter on barrels did not discuss optimal barrel length for shooting at different distances, or optimal twist rate for the various calibers. The chapter on triggers did not have a single diagram showing how a trigger works. Similarly, the chapter on optics did not have a diagram of a scope, or explain essentials like the difference between a first focal plane vs. second focal plane reticle. There are no charts comparing different loads in the chapter of that name. What is the maximum effective range of the different calibers? How does one manufacturer compare to another? What's the function of a sear? How does barrel thickness affect trajectory? These, and many related questions, are not answered in this tome. Short on specific information, the book is full of long rambling stories about this day of hunting or that day of target shooting, sort of what you would expect to hear from some half-soused guy at the bar ("Hey buddy, let me tell you about the time when..."). If you're expecting a tutor on how to become a long-range shooter, best find another book.

Great book and easy to understand
Great book and easy to understand. Others that I looked at were far too technical for me. I wanted general concepts and practical applications for them to enjoy long range shooting as a hobby.

Was expecting a more detailed coverage of the stated topic area, not the historical background. Still worth the price

Good Reference book
A well written and very informative book. It is not for the amateur and is best used as reference guide. It also deals with the ballistics of different types and manufacturers of ammunition.

Super , comprehensive, and great photographs.
If you are a seasoned shooter, or a beginner, it is comprehensive enough to teach everyone a little something, or a whole lot of everything about Shooting, and optics. I'm an intermediate shooter, or maybe even closer to a begginer, so it's teaching me boatloads.

OK, if your a beginner in long range shooting
It is OK but the historical side of long range shooting at the beginning of the book is way too long. It's covering a lot of long range shooting applications but it doesn't go in depth.
