One kit gives brilliant color to 10-15 shirts, depending on how solid you want the final shirt to be
I bought three of these kits so the kids in a club at school could tie-dye shirts. With the three kits, we were able to dye 45 shirts, mostly adult smalls and mediums. I've tie-dyed before and I appreciated that the kit includes soda ash. Pre-soaking the shirts allows the fabric to loosen up a little so that the shirts hold their color really well. The kit comes with four bottles. The dye is already in each of the red, yellow, and blue bottles, and you just add warm water to a line that's marked on it. To mix other colors, you use the fourth bottle, which has markings to tell you where to fill for popular options. Because we had so many kids using the bottles at the same time, we just stuck with the three primary colors, and kids sort of mixed on the shirts themselves. We ended up with brilliant color, but they are still about 50% white. If you are going for more color than white, or if you want to mix colors, I would think one kit might be good for 10 or so adult shirts. With a lot of white, we got about 15 adult shirts from each kit. There is an instructional CD that comes with the kit, as well as an instruction booklet. These show you how to do some basic designs. Following the instructions resulted in shirts that looked like what we were aiming for, which was an added bonus, because most of the kids had never tie-dyed before. There is only one pair of latex gloves included with the kit. I find that if you're careful, you don't get all that much dye on your hands, so I just skipped them for myself and bought extra for the kids. Likewise, there are rubberbands included, but you are likely to need more if you want to get creative.I've washed and worn my shirt at least a half dozen times since dying it, and the colors have stayed bright and true. Next time one of our groups plans to tie-dye, I'll be re-ordering this kit.

Pure fun and great shirts to boot!
I suggested and my daughter agreed that we would choose tie-dye as the craft for her 8th birthday sleepover. This kit fit the bill perfectly. The video is great -- we put the white t-shirts to soak and the girls watched the techniques. Then we all went out on the deck, put on garbage bags as smocks and some gloves, and started dying. There were very well able to remember and follow the techniques with a bit of adult help tying the rubber bands. Of course the dye squirting was pure fun. We purchased an extra kit so there would be 2 of each color to go around and no one got too impatient. Before we started I had each child (including brother who joined in the fun) write his or her name on a gallon size ziploc bag. At the end we put each shirt in the bag and I let them sit in the laundry room over night. I got up at my usual early hour (about 12 hours after the dying), rinsed them all out, and put them in the washer and dryer. All six girls lined up in their new shirts and we got a party picture before they left. This was a great activity, and I love my tie-dye shirt too. I wear it at least once a week.

Fantastic Kit, Buy Two Though
I have never tie-dyed before, so I came at this kit as a complete beginner. I am glad I purchased two of them.By the end of the project, we had dyed 15 shirts total, from two kits, not from one. We did have some dye left over, but not enough for 15 additional shirts unless we had left them mostly white, and by the end we would have had to leave the color choices up to the dyes we had left rather than to our preferences. Also, by purchasing a second kit, we were able to mix colors to create new colors such as orange, purple, and green, for additional options. I priced out buying things a-la carte, but buying a second kit was much cheaper! For creating shirts for multiple people, we simply used a laundry marker and marked the tags with initials. The directions were VERY clear and easy to follow. I did watch the included DVD, which provided great ideas for how to accomplish the different types of tie-dying patterns, but still allows for much creativity and personal touch in the creation process.Even better, the colors have stayed fast. I have been able to wash even the reds freely with my regular wash with no problems. The colors have remained bright and there has been no bleed-off.I do recommend that if working with several people, set up multiple "stations" to allow several people to work at once. We used milk crates to work on, so that any excess dye could run down through them and not get onto the shirts where it is not wanted. The milk crates hosed off quickly between shirts and avoided the problem of using something food-related such as a cooling rack (you should never use anything that will be used for food with tie-dye).In all, this was a great time and the final product has been fantastic.
