Metra Electronics 99-8206 Single DIN Installation Kit for 2001-2007 Toyota Highlander/4 Runner

This is my first time using a dash kit to install a stereo. The instructions were very good, especially for the first steps of removing the OEM stereo.The assembly of the dash kit was easy and fit the space very well. Most of it just snaps together.The let down came when I assembled the stereo into the dash kit. Neither mounting option (screwing on DIN brackets on the side or using the stamped metal insert supplied with the stereo) was a good fit. Both options let the stereo bounce around in the dash kit. In the end I used the metal insert but only a couple of the push out tabs actually made contact with any of the parts in the dash kit which allowed the back of the stereo pivot up and down. To solve the problem, I put pieces of foam under the back of the stereo on top of the plastic cubby of the dash kit. This will keep the stereo from bouncing up and down on rough roads.I think Metra could do a better job of making the dash kit compatible with the metal Din adapter sleeves that come with all new stereos. Those sleeves have been standardized and all of them have push out tabs in the same place so if the dash kit had slots to push those tabs into it would support the radio better.

Value for the money and easy to install

I used this kit to install a single-din head unit in a 2003 4Runner SR5, replacing the factory double-din unit. I had recently purchased a different kit. The first kit, from a different manufacturer and seller, was trash. The pieces were flimsy, didn't fit together, and the instructions were unclear. This dash kit is the complete opposite. The pieces are solid, they snap together easily to make a solid unit that fits nicely in to the dash. I used the din-sleeve that came with my radio to mount the radio, and there is no flex or bouncing. I'd pay twice as much for this kit next time around if I had to just for the ease of assembly, installation, and quality, compared to the junk that is out there.

This is a pretty nice kit. The instructions overall were pretty good, but you may encounter specific issues with your head unit fitment. I really had to mess with the tabs on the head unit sleeve to get the unit to protrude out enough. The instructions mention these are for "securing" the unit, but they don't really offer much security. In fact they don't offer any security for the unit bouncing up and down. I ended up stuffing some high density sponge over and under the sleeve to keep it from bouncing. I've seen installers use black caulk, but I didn't have any handy.They should include a light metal strap that could be used to connect the head unit to this kit. That is what I've seen other installers use when I've pulled radios out.

It fits in the dash of my 4Runner perfectly but the entire bracket is made out of plastic so where it bolts into the dash I am curious about longevity since the bottom two bolt holes don't close all around the bolt (open ended). I am sure it will be fine but for a few extra cents I would have preferred the holes completely enclosed (you can see it in the picture of the bracket what I am talking about).

Can't really say much, worked as expected. Great instructions, went right in. My one complaint is that the pocket on the bottom gets very narrow towards the back. If stuff gets lodged there, even folks with small hands like me have a hard time getting it out.

Not bad kind of flimsy but on par with older ones

I did not see this in the listing, but it states on the package it does not work for a 4 Runner Limited. Looked like a good product, just couldn’t use it.
