New Practical Chinese Reader 5 (Chinese Edition)

Bought a used copy and spent an hour erasing answers to exercises previous owner had penciled in. Caveat Emptor. I started with book 5 in this series for practice prior to HSK 5 and am pleased that the vocabulary and grammar are appropriate. The text is generally interesting. You will need Pleco or a Chinese tutor to properly gloss the vocabulary and grammar because as any student at this level has discovered English translations are approximate at best

I completed the entire New Practical Chinese Reader series through self study. The first 4 texts progressed along with a good selection of common vocab, and similar layouts.Book 5 is totally different than the rest. It is a true reader, and contains literary chinese passages with mostly literary vocab and grammar, as well as a conversation and listening section. This is NOT SPOKEN CHINESE. Many of the words are relatively rare, even in the short conversation sections. Grammar is very literary and rarely used in spoken language. However, there are some useful vocab items and grammar items, not all is rare.In short, if you are looking to read literary Chinese, continue on with Book 5. If not, then branch off into something like Streetwise Mandarin, or even start reading a basic ordinary novel. Think before you continue with Book 5.

Bought this for my son who is semi-fluent in Mandarin. He studied in Shanghai with the US State Department for a year and this is the series of books they used. He likes it.

Excellent text for advanced student of Chinese language.

I like it but it doesn’t come with cds, where can I get de audio ?

Excellent text for advanced Chinese learners and teachers. The lower level need upgrading as to colloquial expressions but this book has them.

This is a very good book for learners. It teaches tons of basic material. It generally has good example sentences for grammar. Most of the texts are interesting, much more than previous books in the series as many are chosen from actual texts or cover more interesting aspects of life. Most of the words are things anyone who wants to speak Chinese ought to learn sooner or later. The grammar is all basic, important stuff everyone needs to know.The biggest drawback is that grammar instructions are in Mandarin. One should expect this to happen eventually. However, it would have been nice to include English instructions in the back.Like previous books, this has the shortcoming of lacking English translations for the readings in the back.Several reviews claim that the material in here is predominantly "literary Chinese" which is false. This is elementary school level material in China. There is almost nothing in here that a ten year old Chinese student would not know. In fact, they probably know far more words and have a much higher reading and speaking ability than what is contained in this book. The readings are selected, largely, from actual published books but are still simplified and the books they are selected from are not the most dense. I fail to see how this qualifies as "advanced" Chinese or "literary Chinese". If this is advanced or "literary" than Bukowski is "advanced" English and daily conversation is "literary English".Overall, this book is worth the purchase, especially if one has had success learning from previous installments in the series.

No answer booklet for the exercises included which makes it frustrating if you want to check your Work! But otherwise very useful book to improving mandarin.

this book is really recomended for your chinese progress and for your study in order to pass HSK LEVEL 5 ;)

Todo en chino, pero como los 4 libros anteriores, al menos a mí, me encantan. Para estudiantes que lleven 4-5 años ya.
