Cookbook that Reads as Novel
Cookbooks are pretty standard and typical, right? Recipe with maybe a picture. Not when Edna Lewis writes one. She weaves personal stories in with each recipe making the chef/reader feel connected to her, the food, and the history of each dish. With recipes revolving around what fruits and vegetables are locally in season, you're bound to make delicious food. She discusses Southern classics, but also why they are classics and the origin of some dishes may surprise you.Whether you want a good read, to make delicious food, or just have something new to cook, you need this cookbook!However...I must attach this warning: every cookbook you purchase AFTER this book will be a terrible disappointment.

Amazing Southern Cookbook!!!
This cookbook is amazing! Some of the reviews mention that it's missing some essential southern recipes, like fried chicken, but I have no idea what they're talking about - Fried chicken is on page 76 haha Anyhoo, the cookbook is laid out by season and offer great insights and hints. There are a great blend of savory and sweet recipes too. And the desserts, oh my, they look incredible. I cannot wait to try these recipes out. Highly recommend!

Could have more recipes
Has a lot of good history but I was more interested in recipes. Interesting but look elsewhere if looking for recipes.

Virginia country coking at its best
Lovely old-style cookery book, filled with receipts straight from the country. Defines the differences between one southern region's style and another, all based on what was grown and available thruout the year. Wonderful discussion of what to preserve and how to do it well. A pleasure to read.

A Most Unusual Cookbook
I bought this book after I watched the old episode of Top Chef, paying tribute to this chef and cookbook author. This is more a collection of recollections centered about the seasonal farm-to-table memories of the author's idyllic childhood. This is the way all Americans ate in the early 19th century, except for those who lived in the few metropolises at that time. Reading this cookbook is like reading Little House on the Prairie: it contains highly detailed descriptions (and recipes) of all the meals they prepared and ate throughout the year from the food they foraged locally and the food they grew on their farm. One of the most entertaining cookbooks I have ever read and I read cookbooks cover to cover as if they were novels.

Beautiful memories and wonderful recipes
A cook book worth reading just for the prose. And recipes that really work to make wonderful food. The introduction to each chapter contains warm remembrances of "life on the farm" as the was growing up as a freed slave's daughter. She gives credit for many of the recipes to her mother, who must have been a wonderful cook. My go-to book for how to make American Southern cooking classics like biscuits, including how to make baking powder and which flour to use so your biscuits will rise properly and be delicious! Learn what combination of dishes are appropriate for every occasion, "back in the day" and for today as well for your next gathering from this book and you can't go wrong!

Linda edição comemorativa
Linda edição comemorativa. Sobre-capa e capa bonitas.

Never heard of Edna Lewis until her legacy was discussed in the recent episode of Top Chef. Immediately ordered the book. Such a treasure trove of information about the southern cuisine and the way it is presented in seasons coz of the availability of fresh produce. Loved it. Edna is comparable to Julia Child. How she brought southern cuisine to limelight just like Julia did to french cuisine. This is not just a recipe book, we get a glimpse of the author's life too. Just tried the biscuits and they are to die for.
