Q: does this one have the slid out writing area?

No, it's basically what you see.

Q: How strong is the tray? Does the tray take the weight of writing on it or will it sink with the weight?

Quite strong. Very sturdy unit. Does what it’s designed to do very well. I am completely satisfied with mine.

Q: There is a hole (size of a quarter coin) cut at the bottom of the console. Is this by design? The tray flies out on nearly every right turns. Normal?

Not sure about the hole on the bottom - maybe some type of drain? I do know that there are several different conversion options and maybe it is for another add-on. On the tray, mine does it if I turn to fast but most of the time it stays in place. Not much help but thought that I would at least let you know my experience.
