The Book of Shaker Furniture

A classic source for Shaker furniture information
This is not a new book, I think it has a copyright date in the 1980s. It has to be one of the best sources of knowledge about Shaker furniture. There are several things I especially like. The author doesn't worship Shaker craftsmanship and plainly states that some pieces were just nailed together. Some authors would have you believe the Shaker dovetailed everything they made from wood. The author also includes Southern and Midwestern Shaker furniture which is sometimes not as stylistically "pure" as New England Shaker furniture.

Pedestrian Work with some Shaker drawings
Decent book with some measured drawings. It fills in some of the blanks from Handberg, Andrews, Shea, Pierce though Thos. Moser and T. Rieman are still the best. Remember--falling in love with Shaker Furniture places you in a culture whose most lasting remnants are the woodwork. And some of that furniture is butt-ugly. I have found only use of highly figured wood, precise adherance to scaled drawings of the time and wood true to the period make this kind of classic work worthy of the effort. In other words, don't get some boards from HD and nail'em up with shortcuts. Yes, do the dovetails and turnings. Finishing is a whole other rant.

Awesome Book!!!
This has to be one of the most informative and professionally done books on Shaker furniture. I've seen this book over the years and I'm glad I finally acquired it...congratulations to the author for a job well done!

icon in the field
Replaced a coy I loaned and never received back. Although Kassay's book has been surpassed by Tim Riemen's, this one has masterful measured drawings and was THE book when published. Unlike other early books on Shaker, this one is fully correct in its information.

Good reference for Shaker furniture
Put this together with Handberg's books, this make a great start to a reference library on Shaker furniture for those interested in reproducing or reinterpreting the form.

An authoritative text
After some years of reading about shaker furniture and making the occasional cupboard, I was inspired to make a replica of the iconic candle stand on display in the American Museum in Bath after seeing Christian Becksvoort's article in Fine Woodworking magazine. This book was recommended by Christian, and I am really glad I followed his advice, as this book gives invaluable extra information, and includes detailed drawings of some other shaker pieces not often featured elsewhere. In my view this book is the next best thing to buying a plane ticket and taking my calipers and rules to the states.
