Organic split moong chilka dal, also known as split green gram, is prepared by splitting the moong, green gram or mung bean in half, without removing the skin. This split green moong dal is commonly used in both savory dishes, as well as in sweet desserts. Moong chhilka, traditionally used as a dal, is also often utilized in khichdi, a delicious Indian comfort food prepared with rice and dal. Chilka dal offers a variety of nutritional benefits, and is rich in protein, the amino acid lysine, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and folate. Split moong chhilka dal is very easy to digest, and is traditionally used a weaning baby food. As a Certified USDA Organic, non-GMO and vegan product, these organic split mung beans perfectly complement vegan and vegetarian lifestyles. Certified USDA Organic products are grown and produced using methods that preserve the environment while avoiding synthetic materials such as antibiotics and pesticides. Such products are produced by organic farmers and food processors that preserve natural resources and biodiversity, only use approved materials, support animal health and welfare, do not used genetically modified ingredients (GMOs), receive annual inspections, and separate organic food from non-organic food. They also follow standards that cover the product from farm to table, including pest control, soil and water quality, and rules for food additives. Organic split moong is a GMO-free food, meaning no specific changes were introduced into its DNA via genetic engineering. These split green gram are also a vegan food, which means that this moong dal exclude all forms of animal products including meat, eggs, dairy, poultry, seafood and honey. This 2 lbs. package of green gram split is recommended to be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

I purchased Vedica Organics’ USDA Organic Moong Split Chhilka (Split yellow mung beans with the skin), so that I could start an ayurvedic kitchari cleanse with my girlfriend. The dal arrived in a clear re-sealable plastic pouch (great for helping to keep the dal fresh). To prepare kitchari, one has to wash the beans twice then add approximately 6 cups of water to the rice and dal and let it cook until both become soft. This takes about 20 minutes plus or minus. While the rice and lentils are cooking, prep any vegetables you want to add and then throw them in and cook with the rice and dal for another 10 minutes or so.In a separate saucepan sauté cumin seeds and mustard seeds in ghee until they pop and then add turmeric powder, coriander, powder (I grind my coriander powder from seeds I have purchased), cumin powder (also ground fresh) and asafetida and then add some cilantro leaves. Then put the spices in with the rice and dal and stir. Then it’s ready to be served. The beans were delicious and I plan to order this product in the future
