Wonderful True Story
My grandmother used to tell me stories about Goliath. She was a young girl during the Baltimore Fire and her father and his brothers went and helped fight the fire by forming a bucket brigade and pouring water on Wise Brothers Shirt Factory at West Fayetteville and Little Sharpe Street - about 3-4 blocks just north of the Hurst Building. This was at the northwest corner of the fire. They took pictures of the devastation from the roof afterwards because the building didn’t burn. Engine 15 was just around the corner from the Hurst Building and not that far from Wise Brothers. My Grammy was apparently a frequent visitor to Engine 15. She knew him enough to know that the firemen tried to discourage folks from feeding him candy because of digestion issues. (I.e. bad gas) The book is a fabulous re-telling of the issues surrounding the fire and the time and energy it took fire companies from as far a-field as NYC to get it under control. It lists fire terms and in addition to the stunning illustrations it includes actual photos of Goliath and Eugene Short.

Beautiful book
I was exploring resources for the story "Aunt Flossie's Hats and Crab Cakes Later" by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard and found this book title. One of the non-fiction stories in the Aunt Flossie story is about the great fire in Baltimore. This is the true story of a horse that saved so many firefighters and their equipment despite being burned. The book is beautiful and although not brand new is in great condition.

Wonderful Children's Book !
I am not a child - I am a senior adult. I have always had a special love for horses. I ordered this book after reading about the Great Baltimore Fire on a "This Day in History" post, which had a reference to this book. I love the book ! What a horse ! Children will love this book about a hero. And the illustrations are beautiful. Now I want to go to the Fire Museum of Maryland.

Goliath: Hero of the Great Baltimore Fire
This children's book that combines historical data with story telling while holding the reader's attention and at the same time recording actual events of the Baltimore Fire in 1904. The center of attraction is a horse named "Goliath" who history records as a hero. The illustrations support the story and are done excellently. The author went to much detail to keep the story within the time frame in 1904 and the fire itself. A good educational book for children of all ages, young and old!

... grown children in the fire service and grandson that love everything about the fire department
Having grown children in the fire service and grandson that love everything about the fire department, I was intrigued with this story. It is a true story and takes place in Baltimore, MD, we live in Maryland, so that makes it even closer to our hearts. Great book for our "fire" library.

Superhero fire horse!
If your little persons like horses, firemen, fire history, scary adventures, buy this book! If yours is a particularly sensitive little person, you might consider starting by showing him the photos of Goliath and assure him that Goliath survived the Great Baltimore Fire. The book is beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated, just a lovely, lovely gift for a youngster you love.
