Durable, perfectly sized, and great for packs
I picked up a couple of these years ago when they were $5 brand new at my local army surplus store. Since then, this style has been hard to find for some reason. Even the traditional canteens are getting scarce because the military seems to be going towards using the cheaper, collapsing type canteens and bladders. I love these because they are perfect for slipping into backpacks and hold a little more water than a standard quart. They are also very sturdy and well-built for being made of plastic. Obviously, you want to clean any plastic container out well before you fill it for drinking. If you do that, you'll avoid any odors or tastes of plastic that some people whine about. Personally, I'd be more worried if the thing tasted and smelled like canned catfood. I think everybody could stand to have a few of these filled and waiting in the wings for emergencies just for the fact that they're A LOT more durable than flimsy "milk jug" gallons of store bought water and much easier to haul around than those big 5 gallon water carriers. BTW, a 5 gallon container of water weighs nearly 42 pounds..how far do you want to lug that around? These are 8" tall, around 5 3/4" wide from side to side and 2" in thickness. They weigh 2.2 lbs. when full. Anyway, it sucks that the price has pretty much doubled on these things, but they are worth owning.

Durable and reliable
1 Liter container for your water.Filter it, fill it, close it, and you're ready to go.CountyComm has a great bag that exactly fits this specific canteen. Remember to clean the inside with baking soda/bicarb or denture tablets (or any other preferred, proven method online) periodically after you use it to maintain it.

What's Not To Like?
Canteens actually have an urban use! This reviewer "temps" in various locations and never knows where a water source will be. A canteen is a welcome companion. 2 tips for the user: 1) Rinse out after each use. 2) As remembered from Army days, make sure the cap is screwed tight when carrying. A final thought: There are fewer and fewer camping and Surplus stores here in NYC. Supplies like this are only a click away! As it says above, what's not to like?

Good stuff! These work great
Good stuff! These work great. Only thing is wash them out and off with dawn a couple times. I did this and they still smell like that powder they come coated in.

Thick, smelly plastic
I was actually expecting a metal one, and was disappointed when I got this. It's been over a week and I can't get rid of the plastic odor (tried washing and drying several times now). I'm not likely to drink from it anytime soon, even though it seems to be safe (has the recycyling symbol 2 - HDPE on the bottom) [...]Perhaps I'll use it just for decoration for some time first.

Great For Storing
I bought three of these canteens because I could tell by the description that they would store three quarts of water far better that three conventional canteens. They fit tightly together in a backpack, ammo bag or any other carry device. I really like these canteens and recommend them.
