A good movie for those researching Autism or related disability.
I've always wanted to see this since I started out doing autism research. I remembered watching parts of it on Youtube. I heard it was a sad movie. I first rented this movie on July 21st 2012. A few years before that I remembered seeing it on TV on the TCM channel. Then I rented it at the Natrona County Public Library and finally got to watch the parts that I liked most. A voice inside my head on January 21st 2015: "Dinner's at 6:30 PM." and I said "Not always." Then as I was about to enter Metro Coffee Co., I then heard "Lunch is 12:30." Then that's when I realized that I liked flexible schedules. I consider myself an Autism Researcher comparing how other kids and adults function to how I function. I'm good at basic math but not science math or algebra. In fact I even get surprised to hear that people I admire get diagnosed with Aspergers or Autism like Temple Grandin and Dan Aykroyd. Even historical figures. At the age of 6, I used 1/4 of my brain to understand what's going on. Now I'm smarter than most adults. If I was in a movie that has to deal with autism, I would bring it down the house. I don't eat with toothpicks when I eat something or carry them with me (except when I eat appetizers at a party or special event and when trying to get food out of my mouth.) Unlike Raymond, I deal with airplane flights and going through airports to catch the next flight (even when flying 12 hours halfway around the world.) I'm just so blessed. When Raymond was reading the telephone book, I thought about what mummy said to me and she said that it's perseverating. No average person would study phone numbers off of a phone book (in my humble opinion.) I recently watched a scene where Raymond told Charlie that he's not wearing his underwear and the fact he picks boxer shorts at K-mart in Cincinnati. Unlike Raymond, whenever I run out of underwear or if there was a problem, I don't go back to Casper to pick up them up at Target or any store that sells them. And when Raymond stopped in the middle of the road when the "Don't walk" sign was lit, he could've gotten into a wreck and died. Whenever Charlienor another person ask any question, Raymond rarely never says no. He would often reply "Yeah." Or "I don't know." When a doctor asks Raymond "Are you autistic?" I would reply "Yes. I have autism."

OSCAR-WINNING PERFORMANCE BY DUSTIN HOFFMAN
Imagine being in your 20's and finding out you have an older brother? This unknown brother has been in an asylum for years and is a highly functioning autistic savant.RAIN MAN won several Academy Awards for this touching portrayal of two brothers coming to terms with each other. Dustin Hoffman was Best Actor for his role as Raymond. Tom Cruise is the materialistic young brother devasted and angered not only by the news of an older brother but the fact their recently departed father has left his estate to Raymond.Charlie is bitter and a player in a big man's world. He needs money and Raymond's inheritance is his future. He takes Raymond on a cross country trip but he is out for a big lesson in life and brotherly love. Raymond is very childlike and dependent on his routine. Lights out at 11 pm sharp, eating food with toothpicks and knowing exactly when PEOPLE'S COURT and WHEEL OF FORTUNE are on TV. Charlie has no patience or understanding for Raymond's simple needs and reliance on repetition. When Charlie learns Raymond's amazing mathematical skills and memory, it is time to stop off in Las Vegas.I've heard from firsthand sources that Dustin Hoffman researched his role with dedication and spent time with austic savants to learn their mannerisms and reactions. Hoffman shows his amazing talents and clearly deserved his Best Actor award. We have a young Tom Cruise just a few years into his acting career taking on a very serious role. Although he is "normal", Cruise's Charlie is far more immature in many ways than his autistic brother. There is a true beauty in this film as we see Charlie grow and mature in front of our eyes. A nurturing instinct is slowly arises as he develops a clear affection for his brother Raymond. It's a bittersweet and heartwarming story to watch. Two very different brothers come together in a very fine film.

Good Movie
My husband absolutely insisted that I see this movie when he found out that I had never seen it. It was pretty good with some funny parts and some sentimental. The downside, I am NOT a Tom Cruise fan, however Dustin Hoffman was simply amazing.

TWO AWARD WORTHY PERFORMANCES
What happened to at least an Oscar nomination for Tom Cruise as well? Since my High School years, I've counted Dustin Hoffman amongst my all-time favorite actors. With films like "The Graduate", "Midnight Cowboy", "Little Big Man" (my favorite film of all-time), he just has a way with characterizations that make movies memorable. And "Rain Man", a film about two brothers reunited after years of separation, Autism, and so much more, is no exception. Well deserved Oscars for Best Film and Actor of 1988. Even better work for Mr. Hoffman than his previous Oscar winning performance for "Kramer Vs Kramer". But the emotional rollercoaster of mood changes Mr. Cruise was called upon to portray, was just as worthy a performance in my opinion. His best work to date. And so I ask once more; what happened to at least an Oscar nomination for Mr. Cruise as well?In one of the more moving scenes on film, after Charlie(Cruise)comes to the realization that his autistic brother Raymond(Hoffman)just couldn't cope outside the institution he had been raised for most of his life, the two brothers heads touch one another's, and after a moment of silence the words are spoken by Tom Cruise; "I like having you for my big brother".Great film making by director Barry Levinson. What a fun journey through every human emotion imaginable.
