Essential---but of limited use to composers
Most modern harpists have seen this book and know its contents well. That alone makes it a useful point of reference for composers. But Salzedo's notation is not entirely standard, and his verbal descriptions leave out much that is obvious to harpists but obscure to anybody else. If you can convince a harpist to demonstrate their instrument for you--showing, for instance, the practical register limits on bdlc and sur le table--then, in one hour, you can learn ten times as much about writing well for the instrument than you can from reading any book. But such as it is, this is a standard reference for interesting techniques, and composers will benefit from having a copy handy.

Another great book by Carlos Salzedo
This book is a little advanced for a beginner harpist but as time goes by it will be so helpful.

Fantastic resource for the composer/arranger
Ever felt utterly daunted at the prospect of writing for this uniquely expressive but complex instrument? Do you know what you want to hear, but aren't really sure how to write it, or even whether your ideas are performable? If you want to seriously advantage your harp writing cred, you need this resource. A phenomenally talented performer/composer/teacher, Salzedo provides a lifetime of technical and emotional insights, which will help you to uncover a broader palette of sound possibilities whilst ensuring a happy outcome for yourself and performers alike. What I really love about this book is Salzedo's obviously deep attachment to the intrinsic magic of the harp whilst leaving no stone unturned in the exposition of technical possibilities- truly the Harp is to Music what Music is to Life!!!!

une encyclopédie en soi
une référence pour moi, mais je suis inconditionnel de Salzedo.La musique avant tout, "la harpe est à la musique ce que la musique est à la vie".Un grand homme.
