Q: How do I open it to empty it?

Not force, one hand. The design is confusing. Most people are using the indentation for the lid to open de cap. That needs extra force. If you apply a little pressure from the side, you release the small tooth gently. The video on youtube requiere to much force on the plastic.

Q: For Prismacolor colored pencils, which is best: the Prismacolor Premier pencil sharpener or the Prismacolor Oval (bullet shaped) Pencil Sharpener?

I love this Prismacolor sharpener. It is easy to empty and makes a very sharp point for controlled, layered drawing. I am ordering a second to keep in my travel art bag. I don't recommend this sharpener to sharpen an initial box of unsharpened pencils--for this I would use an electric sharpener. But, to keep at your desk to keep your pencils sharp, this works really, really well.
