Benaras holds a special place in Kundan s heart, not only because he grew up there as a typical, god fearing, shiv bhakt-Pandit but also because it was the city that gave him Zoya, his first love. Quiet, beautiful with mischievous eyes, Zoya was the girl of his dreams. One day Kundan mustered the courage to tell her his true feelings. She didn t take him seriously and brushed him off. Time passed by and Zoya moved to Delhi to study further. Kundan s love for Zoya never diminished, he carried his feelings all through college and his heart flipped when Zoya came back to his town. Zoya met Kundan and confessed her true feelings to him. She was in LOVE.... with Akram, a college friend from Delhi University and she wanted Kundan s help in marrying him. His world shattered and the rage that Kundan felt was inexplicable. He was torn between his true feelings for Zoya and his hearts desire to help her get her true love, because who could understand that pain better than him. He sets out to unite her with Akram and what follows is a tale of Love, betrayal, redemption and healing set against the very rooted town of Benaras and the upbeat political environs of Delhi. Raanjhanaa is the story of Kundan, his journey from a 13 year old boy in love, who goes on to become a committed, spirited young man. It s the STORY OF LOVE!!

Raanjhanaa
What's with these films that's keep making me bawling me eyes out yet again. Just when I was so excited to see a happy ending but boy that young Kundan died, wanted to give Zoya a finger wagging telling off grrh! But I enjoyed the film as it really pulled your heart the emotions that came out that you really felt for them, despite the culture differences, it's not about looks, it's the inner person of the heart. Great film in total and I recommend watching it again and again, Kundan a cutie pie, who just needed a good old cuddle. Great performances from all in the film. But it's really heart breaking.

so I was delighted when I found it
Since I saw this movie years ago, I have always wanted to see it again, so I was delighted when I found it. The soundtrack is brilliant and the actors amazing. The story has every possible ingredient you might want in a good movie. Love story, dance, humor, great music and intense drama. Raanjhannaa has moments of pure joy and you find yourself dancing, smiling, laughing. On the other hand, the unexpected turn of events is very touching and there are moments emotionally intense.

Depressed. Traumatised. Dead inside.
Personally, I am not okay I feel more depressed after this traumatising movie. HOW CAN SHE SLAP 16 times in the first part. Personally, ill cook her fingers for breakfast. Overall, it's a 'no' from me the ending left me shock, too shocked to even write this review. If your forced to watch a movie with your parents and your boyfriend left you, I would recommend watching this for tips only.

very problematic film
twenty minutes into the film, the hero slits his wrists to guilt/pressure/manipulate the girl into staying with him. Apparently that was romantic. I thought we left all this crap behind in the 90s

An Indian Love Story
What is a Bollywood film without a love story? Raanjhanaa not only boasts one, but also intertwines the subculture, caste system, religion, politics of India into one colorful film. As someone who has come to appreciate Hollywood, I had to realize that this movie is made for Indians and not compare it with other western movies under the same light. So long I have waited for a movie, for an Indian movie to come close to reality, an Indian reality... as opposed to the upper class fantastical type Indian movies. This one sure does come close as one can without sacrificing the appeal of Indian cinema. I can understand its success as associations can be made between this movie and reality for Indians. Glad to own my first Bollywood film.A. R. Rahman does a fantastic job in first two tracks: "Tum Tak" and "Raanjhanaa" but rest of the tracks felt very mediocre, especially coming from such an acclaimed producer.Blu-ray boasts high definition and HD audio but there are no special features. The blu-ray I recieved was for all regions.

A well crafted story..
A well crafted story with awesome stars.. Abhay Deol is growing an enormous different genre artist and his role in this film will make you a new fan of Mr.Lucky (as he was called in oye lucky ! lucky oye). Dhanush proved to b a great actor..his role.. his accent .. and his presentation.. is awesome.. and last but not the least.. Sonam Kapoor.. an almost negative protagonist.. will make you feel how her importance was their through out.. an overall good rated movie.. A.R.Rahaman is as usual awesome... and Benaras is superb...

An Anti-Love Story with some absolutely beautiful songs.
A visually beautiful movie. What seems to start off as a predictable love story takes off on a dark trajectory involving religion and politics. The songs (by A.R. Rahman) are beautiful and are also atypically placed as supporting the scenes as opposed to having the characters singing them. The young stars do a wonderful job.

Vive Danush !

Not your usual Love story
A movie that seems real and true, Anand Rai has made a very realistic movie from the setting to the dialogues. The movie is if you had not read the reviews is about this boy, played by Dhanush obsessed, infatuated and presumably in love with Zoya, played by Sonam Kapoor and the consequences of his actions due to his feelings for the girl. It's a very simple love story with enough twist to keep you engrossed, also the fact that you completely understand the hopelessness of Dhanush character and grows to love him makes this movie His, but I think to overlook Sonam Kapoor would be a huge mistake because her character Zoya goes through this arc of journey, and she has commendably acted enormously well. Its easy not to like the girl because we are shown in Bollywood movies that wooing a girl requires consistency and to following her around and then helping her and if that doesn't work to attempt suicide, but to consistently bring that level of vulnerability to her character and yet be true to herself that she does not love Dhanush character is kind of path-breaking, in fact after I watched the movie I was thinking I would have been disappointed had Zoya conceded and fell in love with Dhanush. That in itself makes it different. All other supporting cast are also so well casted and enormously talented, but the icing in the cake are the dialogues, I love the dialogues of this movie. A.R Rahman also helps in capturing the essence of the movie. See the movie for Dhanush's talent, Sonam's understated acting and the most refreshing dialogues heard in a long time. Highly Recommended.
