I used Penetrol for something other than it's stated purpose, and it worked fantastic. I purchased an old set of metal lockers that had quite a bit of rust on them. I wanted to preserve the patina of rust, but stop the metal from oxidizing any further. So after giving the surface a preliminary cleaning, I gave the entire thing a generous coating of Penetrol, with a second application on the most rusted spots. I used a rag to apply it. It went on evenly and didn't set up too quickly. I gave it 3 days to dry and then sprayed the entire things with polyurethane. It turned out fantastic -- absolutely beautiful. This is a great product to arrest further rusting, while allowing you to keep that vintage patina. You'll need to put the clear top-coat on over it, or it will feel a bit tacky, but with the Penetrol base, that top-coat goes on beautifully. And I've still got half a can left for my next project. It's not cheep, but it's really a nice product.

Great product, but no longer sold through retailers in California. Buy on Amazon
Today, oil and water based paints are designed to dry very fast in order to comply with EPA guidelines. The result is good for the environment, but bad for the user as the paint dries almost as fast as you can put it on. Very frustrating. Using a bit of Flood's Penetrol in your oil-based paint will delay the drying time enough so you can achieve an almost 'brushless' finish, flow in your edges and manage old runs. To obtain the same results with water-based paints, use Flood's Flotrol. I tried to find Penetrol locally (in California), but it's unavailable due to my states strict air management standards. Luckily, it's still available on Amazon. This product can also be used as a sealer for many craft and art projects. It protects old metal and can be used to refinish and add luster to gel-coated surfaces.

I used the Penetrol to coat and protect the rusty patina on the cab of a 1949 flat bed truck. The resulting protection is great although the finish makes the truck appear similar to when it was wet and the sections that still have paint are darker than before. I would have preferred the original patina but this is much better than having the cab destroyed by the surface rusting completely through. It is the best solution available and can easily be prepped for painting should that alternative ever be desired.

Suggestions for this product claim it also removes rust. It didn't , I'm using it to prevent further rust in a moist climate on iron outdoors. Hope it lives up to this claim.

Great for restoring bumpers or faded rubber/plastic too!
This is my favorite product for restoring faded bumpers or side steps on Jeeps. Paint it on with a foam brush if you want a shiny black bumper or use a lint-free cloth to just keep/restore a flat black color. My black bumpers had faded to a light grey from sun damage and this restored them to a dark black color. Clean a lower section or portion facing the ground to test the application first. There should be no need to apply a second coat. I also used this to clean the black metal bumper on the front of my Jeep that tends to have minor rust spots or fading from the sun. Instantly cleans the surface and avoids buying new parts or painting plastic. The silver plastic will not benefit much, if any, from using this product. I've also used this on CRVs with the cladding that fades after a couple of years - worked like a charm. NOTE: You should only need a very small amount to cover a bumper and this quart should clean a dozen vehicles. Wear latex gloves or some protection to avoid contact with skin.

Product worked extremely well
This product was easy to use and worked extremely well in preserving the rust. My completed projects looked great. The gloss finish gave the rusted metal a high-end professional look. I followed with two coats of polyurethane. I recommend applying outdoors due to the odor. I would like to point out that on the container, under the heading of CLEAN UP AND STORAGE: it only states "KEEP FROM FREEZING" and then has a note about VOCs. It does not state that it requires paint thinner (mineral spirits) for clean up.

Worked great to seal some unfinished steel hairpin legs I bought on Etsy. They dried hard and clear and prevented the steel from leaving marks on your skin when you touch it. The steel looks a bit darker now that it is sealed, as I anticipated it would. I will be using the hairpin legs for an indoor desk - I do not know if this would hold up in harsher conditions.

but this product is the best if you are using oil based paints
Took a while to arrive, but this product is the best if you are using oil based paints. Penetrol makes the paint flow like no other extender. I am so pleased that I found this product on Amazon.

I read all the reviews before buying as I wanted something that would prevent further rusting on metal furniture but still keep that lovely colour. This stuff is brilliant. It is very easy to use and I'm not an expert in DIY either! I first brushed off the loose rusty bits and any loose chips of paint with a wire brush and a craft drill for the fiddley bits, then wiped any dust off with a damp cloth. I made sure everything was completely dry and then slapped the Penetrol on with a paint brush. It goes on so easy and you can easily see where you have painted it on. Any drips can be wiped off with the brush or just brushed on elsewhere.....believe me, I just wanted to get the job done so no going slow for me! Then I left it to dry. This does take a while. I left it a minimum of 24 hours but sometimes this would take a little longer. Any tackiness just means it isn't quite dry yet. As I was painting furniture, I painted one side up, left for 24 hours, then turned it the other way up and repeated the job. There's no signs of any joins and any bits I might have missed I was able to fill them in no problem. The result is a beautiful glossy finish and I don't even think it necessary to put on a top coat. This product is pricey, especially if you compare to the US, but so far I have used this on 8 metal bakers' shelves and on a 36 bottle metal wine rack and there is still plenty left for other projects. Plus this product has completely transformed them as they now look very classy. When I run out, yes, I would certainly buy again.
