Medium quality film
This is reported to be a true story, so there's not much you can do without veering from the facts. Denzel Washington, even with his acting chops, doesn't help this film much. There's HEAVY focus on racism, so if you're getting this for an African-American teenager, you might want to reconsider. Overall grade: C.

THIS IS A MUST HAVE MOVIE TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT CIVIL RIGHTS STRUGGLE
When the street fights struggle for equality and civil rights is no longer a part of our living memory, and the battle has moved rather insidiously to paper legislations, it is so important to remind our children that they enjoy a culture that was fought for with blood. This movie is set at the tail end of the civil rights movement of the 60's, about 7 years after the Jim Crow Laws of the South were struck down by the Supreme Court as Unconstitutional. Set in a still largely segregationist South, this movie blew my child's mind! We had to pause it every 10 minutes so I could explain the historical context. It was absolutely inconceivable to her that these things - that this kind of discrimination and arbitrary hatred - actually existed. In light of the alarming and skyrocketing rise in hate crimes this past year, it is so essential to educate our children about the past, and how we are doomed to repeat it if we don't learn from it.
