The Last Time I Saw Paris

Disappointing
This movie has all the potentials for becoming a classic favorite with the big name stars such as Van Johnson and Elizabet Taylor but it instead becomes quite a disappointment. It is one the series of the movies in the period with the story taking place in postwar Europe where romance between American servicemen and local women was in full blossom. But this love story would not be making a lasting romantic impact on the audience, IMO.To cut the story short, the problems are many: 1) the flow of plot line is in disarray; events happen unexpectedly with no explanation of what has been happening in-between, 2) the dialog is scripted and wooden and the actors seem to show no attempt in making it any better, 3) there is a contrived and disingenuous quality to the story's events, 4) actors performing poorly with the lead male character being the worst (Van Johnson), 5) it gets quite boring at times with not much happening except some uninteresting and predictable dialog. All in all, I forced myself to watch it to the end. If you like old movies, it does not hurt watching it and checking up on the young Roger Moore having a bit role as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor's non-acting performance. Walter pigeon and Donna Reed had better performance in their supporting roles. Simply put; Taylor and Johnson lacked chemistry between them.

Lovely Movie...... Poignant.
Lovely movie, with love, conflict, emotion, competition, defeat, frustration with life, and tragedy.Elizabeth Taylor is flawlessly beautiful in this love story of two people who just couldn't seem to get on the same page at the same time. This movie viewer was cheering them on to resolve their problems and conquer life.Spoiler here, but it's unusual in today's climate to see a movie have a happy ending (at least of sorts). Father and daughter belonged together & it was nice to see that happen. Marion's husband is the hero who brought sanity to the crisis. The copy was blurred; I almost didn't stick with it, but became engrossed in the story and glad I did.

F. Scott never intended this silly mess, but got paid.
Typical wide-screen romantic nonsense with tiny bits of the original author's personal life thrown in. Read SCREAM QUEENS interview of Sandy Drescher to discover how they made her do lousy ballet moves, the cute little kid (famous for THEM). This movie was Sandy's favorite part, probably because of all the nice stars she worked with. The movie is so full of over-acting that Paris took a cinematic beating. The drawing of Liz Taylor on the bar wall is freaky. Donna Reed looks entirely p'd-off through the whole movie; what an enforced sourpuss expression. And what studio flak insisted that the theme song should be played over almost every scene? Definitely 1954 soap opera directing. Van Johnson did so many Jim Carey (sp?) expressions that I began to wonder if the director was making faces at him from behind the camera. The actresses are beautiful, young and old, so it's not entirely a musical lost cause.

Instant Favorite!
Came across the song on YouTube by accident a few years back. Revisited the YouTube video just recently just after trying to find another tune from a tv show. I kind of had a moment of “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one Paris song! I need to add that to my Retro playlist on Spotify!” While watching the YouTube video I was like, “I really should consider seeing the movie.” So I finally watched it a few months ago, and instantly fell in love with it. Now I’m looking for a Blu Ray copy of it.

The Last Time I Saw Paris
Elizabeth Taylor is a bit younger in this movie, with Van Johnson, and Donna Reed. Taylor is a playful young lady, in this end of the war drama who sets her sights on Johnson. They act like life itself is one great big party. Eventually the couple get married and have a child. The party is over at least for Taylor, but Johnson has trouble taking his new responsibilities seriously. This movie has been released previously in much cheaper versions, however Warner Brothers has restored it to its original beauty. The colors and picture quality are breath-taking. If your an Elizabeth Taylor fan, then you definitely want to add this movie to your collection.

The Last Time I saw Paris
I love this movie. I think Elizabeth Taylor was at the height of her beauty. However, this movie is in need of serious restoration. The color quality is very poor. Sound is ok. It is no reflection on this distributor as I understand this is a common complaint among most people regardless of who they purchase it from. Hopefully it will soon be restored to its original vibrant color. If you like tragic love stories and watching a beautiful Elizabeth Taylor, add this to your library.

good movie for an oldie.
I saw this movie years and years ago...so it was rather nice to view it again...I remember it rather vaguely, so I did enjoy this again, although it was rather sad...but a nice movie all told.

A Classic Parisian Post-War Romantic Drama
This is a classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer romantic drama, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story "Babylon Revisited."Set in the changeable and unpredictable aftermath of World War Two Paris, the story focuses on two main characters. Helen (Elizabeth Taylor) and Charles (Van Johnson) marry, but adapt very differently to a suddenly acquired financial windfall. Both start seeing other suitors, with ultimately disastrous and tragic results. The story has something of a happy ending, but there is unpredictable drama and emotion throughout.Elizabeth Taylor gives an alluring performance as a young love-struck woman swept up in the romance and unusual times of post-war Paris, but she does not provide the energy and sparkle of later performances such as "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" or "Suddenly, Last Summer". Van Johnson is engaging as an anguished and indecisive ladies man - his emotional performance peaks when trying to win back custody of his young daughter. Donna Read and Eva Gabor portray their characters effectively - at times Gabor almost steals the show from Elizabeth Taylor with her sultry and alluring performance. And, a very early film role by an incredibly youthful Roger Moore is notable. The "Elstree Hill Entertainment" DVD version has a reasonable picture quality, although at times it appears a touch washed-out and not 100% clear. The sound quality is very good, but there are no subtitles to assist with following the dialogue.Overall, a wonderful movie with a young Elizabeth Taylor demonstrating why she went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars. An atmospheric Parisian backdrop and an introduction to Roger Moore contribute to make this worthwhile viewing.
