Review 'A simple but richly imaginative tale with exquisite illustrations... An old-fashioned delight for new children.'- Kirkus Reviews 'This reissue of a German fairytale from 1905 is a beautiful little book with gorgeous Mabel Lucie Atwell style illustrations. It contains everything you need in a Christmas story: ice castles, fairy-children, and snowmen waiters... The magical illustrations tell the story perfectly well without the text.'- Families Magazine 'An utterly delightful wintry tale full of whimsy, sprinkled with magic and sparkling with charm ... A perfect stocking filling, especially if you can conjure up some snow for Christmas morning.'- Playing by the Book 'This is a beautifully illustrated and magical tale. A wonderfully enchanting book, a pleasure for children to read and the children listening really did sit open mouthed. The perfect book for a winter's day.'- Hilary with Isaac (5) and others, Education Otherwise 'Poppy's visit to the Snow Queen is told in a comforting manner likely to appeal to the younger listener; the very quaintness and period feel of the pictures add charm and interest. Von Olfers' illustrative style is decorative, with snowdrop panels bordering each page and patterned scenarios of icicles and frost flowers that will captivate viewers of all ages.'- Gillian Lathey, School Librarian 'Another delightful seasonal book for young children.'- Kindling Magazine 'This magical fairy tale has beautiful plate-style illustrations. A timeless gift.'- Family Interest Magazine Synopsis Poppy is gazing out of the window at the snow when suddenly she sees that the snowflakes are really Snow Children, dancing and whirling in the garden. Soon, they whisk her away to the Snow Queen's wintry kingdom. From the author of "The Story of the Root Children", this is another classic children's story with beautiful illustrations in the art-nouveau style. See all Product description

Sweet pictures, feeble story
This is a cute little book - the pictures would make wonderful Christmas cards, as little red-cloaked Poppy finds herself in the world of the snow children.Unfortunately the story (such as it is) is banal in the extreme. No moments of excitement hold the reader - Poppy is taken to the nice snow-queen, where they have a birthday party. And that's about it.Probably more of a purchase for the adult reader who likes the art work than a young, plot-driven child.

Magical
I really enjoyed this story and have read it numerous times with my 5 yr old daughter and also my class ( I teach Reception). Its a magical ( and slightly eerie) story about a little girl that goes on an adventure with the snow children. The children that I have read it to have all enjoyed it and it's a bit different from a lot of the modern stories. I was able to pose lots of questions to the children about whether they would have liked to have gone to the snow castle. It's a story that was written a very long time ago but it's still enjoyable today.

Very sweet, charming story and lovely illustrations too. My children love this kind of book and it grows up with them too (they still love it and one is a teenager!)
