a great, albeit sterile, introduction to chairman xi's speeches
definitely for the studious, the governance of china vol. 1 is a look into xi jinping's public persona and political ambitions following the long era of neoliberalism.what the book doesn't delve into are more personal views of xi's governance, nor does it elaborate on what exactly socialism with chinese characteristics is. if i could sum it up, i'd say it's a pragmatic form of state-enforced liberalism mixed with chinese realpolitik. you're not going to find a whole lot of references to marxism-leninism or mao's vision of china, his theory and how it has influenced chinese leadership since deng's reign, or anything related to how socialism with chinese characteristics will eventually bring about mao's idea of communism, etc.the speeches are very vague and don't elaborate on xi's political theory beyond "we need to make china a leading figure in the first world [when we eventually get there]" and "economic development good." there's a lot of clever wording in xi's statements that make it very clear that each speech was probably looked over by a very strict committee of statesmen close to xi. the actual literature is very sterile and thoroughly-edited -- though there is some awkwardness. one reviewer remarked how there's got to be some equivalent of "socialism with chinese characteristics" that's much briefer, less of a mouthful to say; it's used heavily and with an inane frequency that will probably get annoying after the first forty or fifty references to the state ideology in the first two or three pages.all together, it's a competently-assembled collection of xi's speeches, some great shots of the chairman/president talking to chinese citizens (and controversially, uiyghers), farmers, intelligentsia, and politicians throughout the years. it feels remarkably high quality for a paperback and is translated surprisingly well from the original chinese.if you know what to expect and are simply interested in learning more about chinese politics, specifically xi's perspectives on economic development and social life in the 21st century, you'll find that this collection is about as good as it gets from the chinese secretariat.

For Chinese observers and policy makers, a must to read book!
Very well written! A book about china's past, present and it's future through the eyes of the most ambitious Chinese leadership. Not only that it tells the history, but it also narrates the important global events and domestic challenges as the President Xi Jinping handles them and sets the strategy for the ruling party to continue to support his agenda for the global leadership.

Insightful explanation of how China has achieved its economic and social changes efficiently on such a massive scale. Will become one of the most un-read books of all time, so purchase and shelve it now.

Very well translated into English.
When comparing to the Chinese version, this English version is very well translated. Hope this English version will help western people understand what is the real democracy and what went wrong to the western democracy nowadays.

Important material to a better comprehension on China's issues
In one hand we have a speach book: it brings Jinping main speaches in the period of his presidency. It turns the book a little repetitive. In the other hand, it brings the main thoughts and goals that China believe. Important material to a better comprehension on China's issues.
