What is the recommended age for this puzzle. How difficult is it to take the puzzle pieces in and out?

Hi David. I don't remember the age on the package but I've had it for so many years and my grandkids play with it all the time. It's one of those 'toys' in my toybox they 'come back to'. It's not the one they chose as soon as they see it like it did in the beginning, but they enjoy switching the outfits to 'mismatch' them. I pretend to be upset if they don't match (of course they know I am pretending and they do it on purpose and keep coming to show me what they did). It is pretty fun that way. Anyway, it IS one of those toys I keep around. My grandkids are now 6 and 8 and I've had this Wooden Bear set for at least 5 years. Hope this helps.

Does this puzzle help kids learn body part and clothes

As a previous responder said, it's some help but expressions are actually more noticeable than body parts and clothing since there's just a head, upper and lower portions to each bear. That being said, it's a fun activity that a fairly young kid can do by themselves and be entertained for a while as there are several outfits per character.

I am not getting how this works, how do the pieces stay on the bears.? are they magnetic or not?

This set isn't magnetic, like some of the other Melissa and Doug sets. It's like a puzzle board. There are different heads, shirts, pants, skirts and shoes for each of the three bears. The child plays with this while the board is flat on a surface....like a puzzle. You can't separate the Bears from the board or stand them up. It's great for 2-5 year olds, boys and girls. Quite a few combinations for each bear, but a child has to figure out which pieces of clothing fit on which bear.

Does the mama bear only wear dresses/skirts???

They are NOT magnetic. Each character's clothes will only fit on that one character; there is no way to share clothes between bears because each bear's shape and pose are different. The mama bear does only wear dresses/skirts.
