AS DESCRIBED, AS EXPECTED. This is a Filter Box only
So I've had this Filter Box in use for the past 5 months. No issues, No problems. Works great. Now ordering a second due to an additional pond project in the works.Having seen several negative reviews recently dated stating "false advertisement" or "no filter included", I had the need to set this product straight. This titled item clearly says, "Submersible Flat Box Filter" so I"m not sure where buyers are confused about a missing filter? I have my product instructions, as one recent reviewer referenced with his negative "false advertising" video...and yes the instructions clearly show HOW TO SET UP this filter box WITH a TETRA filter. NO, it does not say "filter included". As the product details also show and state, what additional pieces are needed for this FILTER BOX operation, I just don't see how buyers are confused. The Tetra filter noted in the set up instructions, is NOT a filter requirement for this box, only a suggestion. As for the FILTER BOX, this item was received and functions as described. It's a two piece plastic box; slotted-holes lid and non slotted bottom tray, which incases a textured rough "green scrubby" type of filter screen that lays inside this box. That's it. Yes I found and was aware from my research, that this filter box lid will have a tendency to lift off, due to it's light weight. And as others noted, just place a rock/brick on top of the lid to weigh it down. I did choose the smallest and heaviest sized rock available to minimize the filter vent coverage which the rock will prevent particulates from passing through to the inside of the box. As long as you don't cover more than half the lid openings, your filter should operate as described. This FILTER BOX has been very effective in collecting the water debris inside the filter screen and also has protected my water filter - bought separately - from getting clogged.Maintenance and cleaning of this box is simple. Detach the outlet hose from the box. Remove the box entirely, remove the filter screen, rinse and scrub box as needed for algae removal. Reassemble. Replace box and screen and reattach the filter hose/line to restart the suction. *Add heavy object rock/decor/flower pot to top of box to secure lid in place from lifting off. Also, best to turn off the water pump while performing this maintenance so as to avoid unfiltered/unscreened water being sucked through your water pump and lines.Would I recommend this product? *Yes. This is a simple easy Filter Box set up for your small pond and is effective when used and cleaned correctly. *However, it can also be a great DIY reference/example to make-your-own version, if you are the DIY type. I personally didn't have the time to seek out the materials and opt for this kit with all the parts needed to get this going within 10 minutes of delivery. For reference; I have a 220 gallon metal water trough and using this Filter Box inside it. My trough is a small fish pond with plants. My research did find horse owners using this Filter Box in their water troughs to help keep the drinking water debris free. I don't see why this wouldn't work for that purpose also. No chemicals are required with this box use. Just keep in mind that this Filter Box will require a water pump no matter how you intend to use this Box - so that water is sucked through the Box, through the filter screen and emits debris- free water through the pump.Hope this helps and clarifies this product, it's use and what comes with it.

Works great
I wasn't able to find replacement foam elements for my old round bucket-style filter anywhere, so I decided to buy a new filter. I was a little concerned by some of the reviews on this one regarding the coarseness of the "fine" element, and when I opened the package I saw the reason for these reviews. The coarse element looks pretty much the same as every other coarse foam element I've seen, but the blue "fine" element also appeared quite coarse, only slightly finer than the black coarse element. Well, I had it, and the old filter was pretty much worn out, so I decided to give it a try. For $17.99 I really didn't have much to lose. Heck, the whole filter box with the foam elements included cost about half what I had to pay for replacement elements for my old filter when I was still able to find them. DO NOT be concerned that the fine filter element is too coarse. What I've discovered is that since it is more coarse it doesn't completely clog up with the slime and silt out of my pond, so water continues to pass through and get filtered even when it is very heavily loaded with crud. My old filter used to move less and less water as it clogged until it would finally slow to just a drip. This one just keeps happily filtering water. It's removing MORE crud than the old one did. Noticeably more. The water stays clearer, and when I pull it out to clean it the filter elements are loaded with a lot more filth than I ever experienced with the my old filter. Also, because the fine filter is not as fine it is MUCH easier to clean out. I just have to hose it off, dunk it in a bucket of water a few times, and shake it out, and it comes out looking almost as clean as new. Nice! 5 stars for function. 4 stars for everything else because I can't speak for the durability yet, and the snap together design gives me a little concern that it might be a bit on the fragile side. Take care when removing the cover. There's one wide clip that holds it together, and that you press in to release one end of the cover. Once released, gently slide toward the end you just released to release the 2 clips on the other end. Don't just pop one end lose and yank upward. It feels like those little clips might be prone to breaking if you're rough with it. Bottom line, for an inexpensive filter this one works great, and replacement elements seem to be fairly readily available for it.
