Hard to kill
I didn't but this pump through Amazon; the manufacture date code in the serial number is Oct 2003. I bought it new. The pump is used for irrigation using creek water and is controlled by a time clock in the house. The pump is stored in a garage and ALWAYS drained and filled with 50-50 glycol while stored. I save the drained glycol and reuse over and over in the pump. The pump has performed flawlessly. Recently the hoses were rolled up for mowing but I forgot to shut off the time clock. The motor came on at 2 AM. At 6:30 AM my son could hear the pump screaming from the house and could see steam. After the motor was shut off the water in the main was draining down hill, through the pump and squirting out the melted hole in the suction hose. I expected the pump to be trashed after it ran deadheaded for 4.5 hours. Normal operating pressure with 4 sprinklers running is 44 psi and 16 gpm. I cut 3" off of each rubber hose and reattached the remainder to the pump. To my amazement, the pump performance is the same, no more noise than normal and there are no leaks from the seal. This pump is only idling in my application (3100 rpm and 1.5HP motor). When this pump dies from old age I will definitely replace with the same model.
