I am happy with this pump for my above ground pool
I have an above ground metal frame pool that came stock with a small cartridge filter and integrated pump into my skimmer. The filter and pump on my original pool were less than ideal. It would clear up the pool, but could not keep up with heavy use over the summer months with my kids using the pool almost daily. For this year, I decided to update to a pump and sand filter setup to provide better capability. I was unable to find a preconfigured pump and sand filter setup in stock or for a reasonable price, so I decided to purchase a pump and filter as individual components and plumb it together myself. Based on the sand filter I purchased, I could go up to a 3/4 HP pump. This is the pump I ended up selecting. I'm happy to say that this pump has worked very well form me after setting it up and using it for a little over a month. Pros: This pump is quiet. I was worried that it would be loud considering its size, but it isn't any louder than the tiny integrated pump on my pool. It just makes a very light hum when it's on, and I don't find it distracting at all. This pump moves a lot of water. This pump is capable of generating a natural water circulation in my pool when not being used, and the debris gathers in the center of the pool to make vacuuming easy. It also cycles enough water to keep the pool clean with daily use. Setup was fairly easy. The pump comes with adapters for 1.5 inch PVC, which I used to plumb up to the sand filter, and also used to connect from my pool to the pump. If you are comfortable working with PVC, then connecting this is fairly straight forward. I did have to use a rubber connector with hose clamps to make the transition from my pools skimmer connection to the intake PVC pipe, but that is an issue with my pool, and not with this pump. Cons: Having to install a grounding rod and bond the motor housing to the ground was annoying. I wouldn't recommend skipping this process though, as it is there as a critical safety factor if there were ever to be a short within the pump motor. Lastly, the plug cord on my pump had a small nick in the outer insulation. It was not enough to cause me any concern, and I taped over it with electrical tape. I'm assuming that I could contact Doheny's about getting a replacement cable, but I haven't done that. I may hard wire this into a control panel at some point anyway. I'm very happy with this pump. I would buy this pump again based on my experience with it so far.

Keeps water clean
Works perfectly and the best purchase thus far for upgrades to our above ground pool. I was cleaning our pool every single day for at least an hour. We were using shock and other aggressive chemicals almost daily just trying to keep things filtered and clean. Once we got this pump, the results were immediate. Besides the occasional skimming the surface before swimming, the only real maintenance I had to do was vacuum twice a week.. which I was doing daily prior to this pump. (I'll add that when I upgraded to this pump I also upgraded the filter to a larger capacity filter) The only downside to this pump is there is not an on/off switch. So to stop the pump you have to unplug it. Turning off the filter does not turn off the pump, so keep that in mind. This pump is super easy to clean, simple to install, and durable. Its small and requires very little space. I recommend to anyone that has an above ground pool looking for great pump. Our pool is 12' x 22'

Performing well in a tough environment
We are using the Doheny 1 1/2 hp pump in a non-standard way, but it seems to be doing extremely well. So well in fact that we are ordering two more; one for a backup and one for a second system. The non-standard use? Greenhouse aquaponics. We are using this pump as a circulating pump for essentially a 3,300 gallon aquarium (or even a pond). We are raising a fish called a tilapia and circulating the (not very clean) water to plants in vertical towers, grow beds and bato buckets. The pump has been running 24/7 for 9 months now without a problem. We only shut it off once or twice a week for about ten minutes to clean the filter. The basket is pretty easy to clean with a small brass bristle tooth brush (we get a lot of algae and other fun stuff in it). It is very quiet compared to the Intex pumps we were using that didn't last very long at all. The cord gets warm and a little soft which might indicate the wire needs to be bigger but so far it hasn't developed any issues. The pump is open, inside the greenhouse, but it does run fairly warm; almost too warm to the touch. The garter snakes sure seem to like it. Water temps go from about 55 or so in the winter to 85 degrees in the summer. It gets up to 100 degrees air temp or so at times, especially in the summer. We use a 90% shade cloth over the fish tanks and pool (one of those Intex 12 foot by two foot metal pole ones) and the pump is under that also for about eight months of the year. We are at an elevation of about 5,500 feet, have five IBC tanks, the pool, a couple of solar collectors (1/2" CPVC pipe over a metal back in a five-by-eight foot two by four box), ten buckets, eight three-foot vertical towers, a 480 gallon aluminum holding tank, three breeding aquariums and six IBC tank-top gravel grow beds. I think the 1 1/2 hp pump has enough oomph to supply even a few more grow beds or towers too. The brushes usually fail on a motor first. Don't know if they can be replaced on this motor but we'll give it a shot when the time comes. It'll void the warranty (which was probably shot right away anyway because of the non-standard use) but warranties don't last forever. The pump, though, is seemingly giving "forever" the old college try so far. However, it's not the warranty that impresses. It's the quality of the item, and this pump so far has it. Update 6/24/20: The pump finally failed after about 4 years running 24/7. The motor seems to be running, but it is not pumping. I haven't taken apart the pump to troubleshoot, but it doesn't look like its plugged. Ran longer than I expected, which is good.

Runs good, abnormal pump unions
As the title states, 4 stars for a great running and quiet pump. Minus one star for the abnormal pump unions and difficulty of turning the pump sideways and correcting the strainer. Unsure if the strainer was made badly but you can’t take it off the pump. I had to shave down the plastic to get it to rotate 90 degrees back upright after rotating the pump to connect to the filter. You have to use the supplied glue on pipe unions. You can’t go to a pool supply shop and get different unions for this pump, they are an abnormal size, I’m guessing proprietary. I had to completely replumb my entire system for the new pump. Other pumps I’ve replaced have been drop in replacements with the standard union.
