Review In this vivid, sweeping history, Claudia Gold brings to life fifty extraordinary women united not just by sex, but by talent, intellect and driving ambition. Well known matriarchs such as Cleopatra, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Elizabeth I jostle for position with comparatively unsung heroines such as Theodora, Empress of Byzantium, Margaret I of Denmark, and Liliuokalani, Queen of Hawaii. Quick and Easy Reference Point on Women Who Ruled
I really enjoyed reading this book because Ms. Gold looked at a wide array of women not just the usual suspects like Isabella of France, Queen Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, etc. She delved into the far reaches of history through to present day. I learned a lot about women who I had never heard of and a few that I had only heard mention of in passing. Ms. Gold isn't writing lengthy biographies of each woman but a quick look at their history. She often tries to sort out fact from rumor but this is in no way an in depth look at it. Ms. Gold is giving the reader more of a reference point upon which to do more reading and research which I quite enjoyed. Ms. Gold has a very easy and engaging writing style that is never dry and boring.
