The Amateur Wind Instrument Maker

The only relevant and still available book on the topic that I could find
It is a solid introduction to making of woodwinds using rather primitive methods that are available and suitable to hobbyists/amateur instrument makers. The book offers enough instruction to be successful at building such instruments even though the information is a bit dated. I wish there was a bigger section dedicated to tuning. One negative and a quite disappointing item to mention is that there are few mistakes in the drawings where the numbers simply do not add up or dimensions are missing and one must use approximate (but not accurate) values to finish the work. Still the book deserves 5*

It's woth it for the plans.
Any where you go the price of even a poorly made fife is around 40$ Then you have things like crumhorns and racketts. Racketts list from 250 on up and good luck even finding a Tenor recorder for less than 300 (U.S.) So just on a plans basis the book is a good investment. It's not a shop how-to manual. The book assumes you allready have and know how to use your tools. The author provides the needed information to make simple (Renassance-ish time period) wood wind instruments. It's exactly what it says is, an amature guide and from the stand point, it's an excellant book and an excellant buy

Good information, but a bit dated
I bought this recently on Amazon because after about 5 moves, my original copy of the first edition had gone missing. After re-reading, all of the techniques and plans appear the same, with changes to the resources and vendors lists. While all of the techniques and info are still very helpful and valid, many of the vendors and sources listed are no longer in business, but thanks to search engines such as Google, the components can still be located. I built a cornamuse with my first edition, and am currently gathering special tools and wood to have a try at making some recorders from the plans in this book. Good book, but I dropped a star for the out of date resources.

Would prefer more modern designs, but definitely interesting and worth the money
Very interesting book. While I would have preferred a few more modern projects it's definitely a good read and worth the money if you're interested in this subject. There is plenty of information in the book about how to build the projects, but it's not going to lay it all out for you and give you every single detail in step by step format.

Good starting point
The book is an excellent starting point for the amateur wind instrument maker, and also a nice addition for one's collection. However the information and techniques it provides is now (40 years after its publishing!) available freely in the internet, so one should not expect to find something new in that book. The technical drawings are OK, but certainly not for professional use. Very good list of bibliography and pre-internet-era resources.

Great Projects for Woodworkers
Great intro to making woodwind instruments. If you are a woodworker, especially a turner, making the instruments in this book is fun and a change from the normal lathe projects.

Love it
I really love this book, if you're a woodwind lover you can't miss it! It's a good reference also if you're interested in making these instruments (but consider it's not a truly technical book).

instrument primer
This book is a good general introduction to the subject with further references that I have not followed up yet. As it is of American origin there are some elements that need a little interpretation but it contains much useful information.

Interessante.
Non ve ne sono molti di libri di questo tipo in giro. Empirico nel procedimento, presenta alcuni schemi da cui poter ricavare progetti per strumenti reali. Interessante
