Great fun and reading practice all in one
My grandson begged for this and "Take Me Out Of the Bathtub" - he reads and sings them in the car, the tub, before bed... great memorization practice, and lots of fun!

It's a lot of fun.
Very cute poem parodies to common children's songs. I use it in class to teach students how to write their own parodies. It's a lot of fun.

Lighthearted Book
This book was perfect for a course assignment I had to do. I can see this book being a very fun read for parents to read to their children. Book was of outstanding quality and surpassed my expectations.

Great illustrations
First of all, my favorite part of this book are the illustrations. David Catrow captures so many funny and delightful expressions on the faces of the students, teachers, school nurses, etc.I love the concept of this book. Remember Charlie Brown's pumpkin carols? Taking a familiar tune and tweaking the lyrics is one of my favorite things to do. My kids and I have a fun time changing the words to a song to make them comical. I sang these songs with my 9-year old daughter and we had fun but we ran into some problems, which is why I have reservations about this book.1) A few of the melodies in this book are not all that familiar. (Miss Mary Mack? Oh!Susanna?) I had to look the former one up on the internet to familiarize myself with the tune. Yes, I knew the tune but not by its name). I think that many people would not be able to identify all of the tunes here, and so they couldn't appreciate the parody. I would have loved a music-only CD of the tunes so that I could pop the CD into the player and "sing" the whole book with my kids. OR at least, a bar of the music of the tune on the pages to remind the reader of the melodies. The ages of the book are 8-12, but my 9 year old didn't know many of the melodies. This book, then, requires adult input and maybe the internet!2) In one of the parodies, there is a reference to a little boy cheating on a test. Some may call me oversensitive, but I am an educator and I don't like giving the impression to kids that cheating is OK. In the parody, the girl whispers something back to him (presummably the answer) but he can't hear her. The tone of the book gives the message that "I hate school". The concluding parody is about how glad we are that summer vacation is here. I know that's how children feel, but shouldn't we encourage our kids to love education and learning? This book is full of lazy students not wanting to do their homework, students not prepared for exams and other assignments, students who find music just too hard and not wanting to practice, etc. There is a pessimism about learning that I don't find all that funny. My daughter was familiar with another book by these authors "Take me out of the bathtub" and she says that she prefers this book to that one. I, however, can only recommend this book with reservations.
