overall,it's a decent holder..where it grabs the rod,the inner piece could be wider,as there is a small gap on either side and you have to adjust smaller rod,3/32, so it'll grad firmly and not stick out cockeyed.....other then that, it seems pretty good...as for durability and sturdiness, that's yet to be determined as I just got it and used it for only an hour so far......

While this is much better than the standard "spring clamp" electrode holder (when it works), it wasn't without flaws. Firstly, it doesn't clamp 1/16" electrodes very well AT ALL. You REALLY have to mess around with them to get the mechanism to bite down on them. Secondly, the Bakelite casting had EXTREMELY sharp casting flash on the end where the wire exits the handle. It was razor sharp and ABSOLUTELY would've cut through the best, thickest insulation on any wire in short time. I ended up filing, then sanding it down with 400 grit sandpaper. Definitely NOT something I'd expect from Hobart. When I contacted them to bring the issue to their attention, they did respond and here is their "cut and paste" response. "Thank you for your feedback. Our accessory products team has inspected some and can see your concern. They conveyed that they are in contact with our supplier to address this issue. Thanks you again for your business. Regards, Hobart Welding Products." They never offered to replace or otherwise compensate me in any way. Heck, they never even apologized! Yeah, I'm a big boy and fixed mine with sandpaper, but I didn't want to have to mess around "fixing" a brand new item, especially since not fixing the issue could've led to a very bad situation. To add insult to injury, I found the item $5 cheaper at my local TSC.My suggestion is to heed the advice in my review title.

Repair type welding jobs.

I can not say enough good things about this holder. Fast change by just a twist, comfortable to hold. Have always used the "clamp" type and needed a replacement. Decided to give this a try even though never use. Best money I have spent on a holder.If you are building up a welder or just need to replace your holder, this is the way to go.I have about 45 years welding experience and am really surprised I have never tried one.

I'm giving this five stars not because it's the best electrode holder ever but because of the value. For the money this performs as well as some others I have used that were 3 time the price. Someone mentioned it wouldn't hold 3/32" rods. Not true. I have been welding with 1/8" and 3/32" rods for the week since I received it. No problem. Just make sure you insert the rod properly and tighten it well. I will probably buy another for a back up.
