Product Description **RELEASED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU RAY IN NORTH AMERICA** In his follow-up to the critically-acclaimed A Touch of Zen, trailblazing Chinese filmmaker King Hu brings together an all-star female cast, including Hong Kong cinema stalwart Li Li-hua and Angela 'Lady Whirlwind' Mao, in this lively martial arts adventure. When Lee Khan, an official working for Mongolian Emperor Yuan of the Yuan Dynasty procures the battle map of the Chinese rebel army, Chinese resistance fighters, aided by an undercover girl-gang within Khan's ranks, strive to corner him in an inn. Featuring stunning action sequences choreographed by Jackie Chan's 'kung fu elder brother' Sammo Hung and a generous mix of intrigue and humor - The Fate of Lee Khan - is a legendary wuxia masterpiece. Bonus features include: NYAFF Chat: The Fate of King Hu video discussion and new essay by Chinese-language film expert and author Stephen Teo. Review The Fate of Lee Khan is to the Chinese martial arts movie what Once Upon a Time in the West is to the Italian Western: a brilliant anthology of its genre's theme and styles, yielding an exhilaratingly original vision. --Time OutThough its fights are choreographed by the legendary action director Sammo Hung, making liberal use of cartwheels and hidden trampolines, contemporary viewers may decide they aren't Fate's main attraction. More exciting is Hu's handling of the minutes before violence erupts: His staging and editing pinballs our attention back and forth around the small inn, as conspirators furtively communicate with each other or gauge how to respond to the suspicions of Khan and his underlings. These masterful sequences are a delight, and make a brilliant transition from the hangout pleasures of Khan's first half to the big exterior set piece that will end the film. --John DeFore, The Hollywood ReporterWith its bevy of female stars, action choreographed by Sammo Hung, and classic inn setting, this 1973 classic is prime for rediscovery. --Mubi

Theme and Variations - Women and Inna
One, I ordered this from Amazon.com and had it delivered to Canada, where it was unavailable - so thanks! Two, I will be able to review this blu ray before Gary of DVD BEAVER whose site I warmly recommened.Three, This was the third film KING HU made centered around strong women who are martial artists with the action taking place largely in one location, an Inn.Four, Do not expect this to be an Angela Mao film. The film boasts six strong women: the older innkeeper and her four serviing girls Vs the single Yuan woman, sister to Lee Khna.Five, Action does not take place every five minutes. There is only one instance where the girls show you what they are capable of. Everything builds to that moment when the final battle must take place, and it is a fairly extended sequence.Six, There is a plot, a story that is well told, so we know what we need to, though there are surprises.Seven, KING HU probably worked too slowly and with much care (just look at those costumes) to be commercially viable as a director on going with Shaw Bros. His films could be considerd "art house" films but they succeed as entertainment.Eight, Imagine something like a 1972 Taiwanese MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and you will not be disappointed.Nine, Thanks to FILM MOVEMENT who also gave us THE GREAT SILENCE which also broke with genre restrictions!

Has English Dub
The blu ray has solid picture and a decent english dub, along with the original language dub with subtitles. The movie is enjoyable, set mostly in a large inn dinning area. More story orientated than Shaw Brother films, but there is a good flow of acrobatic action. I will enjoy repeat viewings.

Chinese Spaghetti Western -- With No Firearms!
Set back when the Mongols ruled China and some Chinese weren't happy about it at all, a high Mongol ruler travels to an inn in an obscure town to receive vital intelligence from an enemy traitor. This activates various spies, agents, groups, etc, leading to a whole lot of martial arts battles. Did I mention that one of these groups was composed of beautiful young women? Young women who have skills with fighting, stealing, and other things?Definitely worth watching!

Highly Enjoyable!
I recently purchased five King Hu movies on a whim. I kept reading about their reputation in regards to Hong Kong cinema and I purchased all five Eureka (Masters of Cinema) releases, just to see what all the hype was about. So far, I have watched Dragon Inn (1967), A Touch of Zen (1970) and this one, The Fate of Lee Khan. All three films are highly entertaining, but I think this one is easily my favourite of the three. The Fate of Lee Khan was originally released on December 6th, 1973 in Hong Kong. The film is directed by the previously mentioned King Hu, was written by the director and Chung Wang. It features a lot of beautiful music composed by Joseph Woo and some excellent Cinematography by Chao Yung Chen. The film sees a Mongol general named Lee Khan (Tien Feng) and his sister princess Wan-erh (Hsu Feng) travel to a run down place called Spring Inn. Their goal is to acquire a map that shows the locations of the local rebel forces. It's up to the innkeeper (Li Li-Hua) and her band of resistance fighters to secretly recover the map.The plot of the film was really easy to follow. I liked how each character had their own easily identifiable features, whether it was a music instrument, the colour or style of clothing or even the manner in which they presented themselves. The pacing of the film was quite quick. In fact, I was genuinely quite surprised at how fast the run time dwindled down. The film is around an hour and forty minutes long but did not feel it. It passed by me real quick. The Fate of Lee Khan isn't quite as action packed as the other King Hu movies but more than makes up for it with good humour and great character moments. Naturally, there is a big show down at the end and that most certainly doesn't disappoint. Some folks might be disappointed in the lack of straight up action but the build up to the last twenty minutes is well worth the wait. This particular Eureka! (Masters of Cinema) release looks really nice. There's no lack of detail in the image whatsoever. There is very little in the way of print damage. There's maybe a handful of seconds where there's a loss of quality. It's a consistently stunning print. I particularly enjoyed the clarity and powerful colours that came out of the actors clothing. It's great to see movies where everything worn isn't black and white with dirty jeans being the only source of colour. It looked particularly striking on my tv.Those looking for an array of special features might be a bit disappointed. On this print of the film there's several audio tracks, including a commentary by the film critic Tony Rayns. There's a video essay by David Cairns and the typical booklet that you tend to get with these Eureka! releases. It would have been nice to have a little more extras but they're more of a cherry on top than the actual cake. The real meat of the product is of course the actual film and that's where my real focus went.As it is, this is well worth a buy for those who enjoy Hong Kong cinema and the wuxia genre. It's a beautiful, very well paced movie that kept me highly entertained for the best part of two hours. I understand if the higher than normal price is a bit of off putting. But it would be a shame to miss such a good film. It may very well be worth the extra pennies.
