Empowering message
What an empowering book! It does just what myth and dream have always done. Speaking in the language of our subconscious layers, Lucy’s liquid prose and McCarthy-Evans’ magical illustrations cast a spell—one that teaches something important. Maya’s journey shows us the way through our fears and into the expression of our best. The ocean is both the scene for Maya’s dream and Yoruba’s sacred action--as well as an apt metaphor for our inner ocean of feelings, which always awaits our skillful taming.

Madeline sees her mermaid self in Maya
My 7 year old Grand Daughter has loved reading this story over and over. She is dark skinned, of Nicaraguan-Caucasian heritage, and feels like this could be a story written about her.... She was especially honored to meet the author at a book signing, intrigued by the idea of writing & creating a storybook.

The story and gorgeous illustrations capture your heart!
My 4 1/2 year old granddaughter loved this book! She was captivated by the beautiful illustrations - particularly the shells and sea-life - and wanted to know more about turning into a mermaid. How could she do that?It was if helpful to talk with her about the story and what it's like to wake up with nightmares - which she has done many times. I bought several to give as gifts as well. Wonderful book for kids of many ages!!
