Studio: A Place for Art to Start

I purchased this book to help support my elementary students who are in a hybrid school situation due to coronavirus. The art room had been repurposed to accommodate our spread out class cohorts and I am teaching on a cart this year. I felt it was important to show my students, not only a variety of different types of studios that nurture different types of creativity and art-making, but also that the world is their studio (not just a designated room in a building they have grown used to). While the cute illustrations and simple sing-song text may seem geared to more early elementary, my 3rd, 4th and even 5th graders were all intrigued, engaged and asked lots of questions about the detailed tools and objects in each scene (especially the dark room!) I love how the book leads you through a series of different media-focused studios but ends in the simplest type of studio of all- what looks like a child’s bedroom. I teach choice-based art and many of my students have been inspired by the book and chose to design, draw and/or build models of their own dream studios. It’s all very fun and joyful which is exactly what they all need right now.

This book is wonderful!! It is very thoughtfully written and the illustrations enhance the story perfectly. My daughter and I enjoyed exploring all the different types of art studios there are. The photo included is of my favorite page. It depicts how art varies depending on perspective! Such a powerful teaching point for our little budding artists!

I really love the illustrations in this adorable kids book. It has a great easy to follow story for little ones with a nice message to encourage creativity that's not idiotic or saccharine.

This book is perfect. It is imaginative and beautifully assists in teaching what it means to have a designated area to be creative. Our favorite page is the one with the bat that flips upside down! Thank you, Emily!
