The Realism Challenge: Drawing and Painting Secrets from a Modern Master of Hyperrealism

It's really a challenge
The media could not be loaded. After creating a few viral videos on realism drawings, Mark Crilley has finally come up with a book that shows you just how he draws those amazing realistic artworks. The Realism Challenge goes behind the scenes with several tutorials that teaches the skills and techniques required to bring realism to your drawings.Through the step by step demonstrations, you'll learn how to observe your subjects, put down the lines to form the shape, and proceed on to colour and adding shadows. The instructions are very clear and are always prompting you what to look out for. For it's all those little details that create the realism. One thing about realistic drawings is they take time. Even drawing something like a piece of paper, cracked egg or a handful of pieces of popcorn takes a good involvement of time. Techniques are important but observational skills are almost as important or even more so. I've tried several of the exercises and realised that I was going too fast. One really has to slow down to observe all the subtle changes in colours and shades in your subject. This book certainly demands patience. There are thirty lessons in the book and that's a lot of opportunity to get your practice. The payoff is a beautiful piece of artwork.Ultimately, it's quite fun to challenge yourself to complete the drawings. Through the book, you'll also learn to create textures like those on a piece of toast, metallic surface, transparent bottles, food, etc.The only downside is the source photos could have been printed much bigger, perhaps one page so that people can see the subjects bigger. For example, it's not easy to make out the details of small seashells in one of the lessons.Highly recommend to all who loves to draw.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Incredible!
This is my 4th Review today concerning Art Books I've been acquiring throughout the week. My apologies that there are no pictures, but I'm sure someone will take the helm and snap a few in the near future.Mark Crikey is a very talented Artist. At one point I was Subscribed to his YouTube Channel but didn't have the patience or time to follow along. Recently I've been watching Hyperrealism Drawings and it is the most complex, beautiful thing I've ever seen. To achieve that task takes patience, practice and skill.I will admit I am no where near being ready to try, but I was looking for a professional book as part of my arsenal. When I saw Crilley's name I knew I had to get this book. He is the only one that seems to have attempted this technique because I have not found/seen any other books on Hyperrealism. So if you're the opposite of me, and or fall into the same category of wanting to try this Amazing Technique I say get this Book. Quickly, before it's sold out 🙂

This book helps
I've been watching Mark Crilley's YouTube videos for a long time. I've been learning from them. My art has improved because of them. When this book came out I bought it to support the artist. I appreciate his work and wish to encourage him.If when you think of Mark Crilley you think of Manga, this book will blow you away. It is written in a casual friendly style that is Crilley's trademark. The author takes you, step by step, through the drawing process. It doesn't make the drawings easy but it makes them less difficult. The book begins by listing simple art supplies. The first drawing is a torn sheet of paper. It proceeds through more complex drawings to items like candy bars. The book teaches how to add a 3-D look to drawings using light shading on items such as glasses and tools and flowers. It uses graphite (I sometimes substituted charcoal). colored pencil and water color (I substituted watercolor pencil).I don't feel my work has reached Crilley's level of artistry but it has improved through the use of this book.

A fun set of exercises to introduce you to the art of Realism!
Do you want to really learn how to draw the reality you see? Are you going to actually go through with the exercises? If you want a good book to get you started as a lifelong Realist then this book is wonderful as each project builds. If you're curious and want to try it out then do it! You'll not learn to do basic drawing, perspective, or go over how to use certain supplies so I don't recommend it for an absolute beginner. That being said, if you're curious about this then you can just by the bare essentials using his supplies list then go to town on these projects. You aren't spending a fortune on supplies and you'll be proud of each project as you complete it. I'm working on projects and make sure you give yourself deadlines if you want to do this for a living. Give yourself time but don't take six months for one drawing.Mark's book is a nice step by step book and if you have the ambition to do this then this makes a great introduction into Realism. See if you have the patience for this go through each project from the beginning. I've had a lot of fun with this book and still use the techniques I've learned. If you still aren't sure check out his YouTube videos to see what you can learn to do.

Interesting Challenges
I was a little skeptical that this book would proffer any advice that others already hadn’t. However, the side-by-side method is useful. Or even just laying your object on a piece of paper the same as you work on to see how the shadows fall. It teaches you - again - to look. Really look, observe and create what you see, not what you think you see. I thought I’d be using watercolour pencils instead of watercolour, not being great with watercolour. However, this is improved following the examples and I produced a piece of mushroom picture that did actually look like the manky piece of mushroom I chose as my object.

Great book!
This was a good book for me.. I had become bored with my artwork and needed to focus on my drawing skills. Mark has done a fantastic job at creating really nice artwork out of someEveryday objects. I haven't actually started any of the projects in the book but have read it twice! Now to get started...
