The Sea Painter's World: The New Marine Art of Geoff Hunt

This volume predominately presents Geoff Hunt's works of the past 8 years, mostly paintings of "the Age of Fighting Sail", but with some paintings reaching forward to the modern era and others to the 16th century. A few works are specifically connected to the Aubrey-Maturin nautical novels of Patrick O'Brian (a connection which first brougnt Hunt to international acclaim), some relate to the Horatio Hornblower novels of C.S. Forester, but most are from the "real world" -- paintings full of energy and excitement and beautiful light. Hunt provides a commentary of how the various paintings came to be, covering both the intensive research necessary and the artistic challenges faced.This is a volume that will reward any lover of the sea with hours of happy browsing.

Was a little hesitant to buy a second book which appeared similar to the first volume. Many times a work is given a new jacket or republishes previous work. Not the case for this volume. It contains new and striking works. As in the first volume the paintings are presented in whole and then printed magnified to show detail in painting technique.It is amazing what Geoff Hunt can accomplish with a few dabs of color, with the touch or stroke of a brush. These type of books are generally not cheap but this one is worth it.This is obviously not a Kindle book but I now have a Kindle and you will have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Hunt is perhaps one of the best marine painters currently working and well known as the illustrator of O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin series as well as Historical and contemporary naval vessels and events. Excellent large format illustrations andcommentary by the artist on his research and work

In addition to the gorgeous illustrations, this book contains the artist’s commentary on the techniques of painting ships and seascapes-thoroughly educational and enjoyable!

One of the finest works on this topic that I have ever seen. Geoff Hunt's work is simply amazing and gives insight into the developmental parts of his paintings that is truly remarkable.

If you are interested in the work of this marine painter or marine painting in general, this is a book you should have. The reproductions are first rate and the text useful and illuminating.

excellent coverage of the subject

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my husband who is also a Marine Painter. He says the book is a wonderful resource and it is one of his favourite books. He loves it...good choice he said.

既に”The Marine Art of GEOFF HUNT"を購入し、中身はとても素晴らしくリアルな帆船画が多描かれていました。それで今回本書を英国から取寄せ高価でしたが正解でした。先の本に劣らない内容で本当に素晴らしいものでした、18世紀～19世紀の帆船とその歴史的背景、ナイルの海戦、トラファルガーの海戦、そして独立戦争当時北米東海岸の風景と、その頃の英米の軍艦がとてもリアルです。　もともと帆船模型の製作をしていましたが国内に帆船資料が少なく困っていましたがこの書では細密な艤装まで表現されていてとても参考になります。　最近はジェフ・ハントの作品を複数模写して楽しんでいます。個人的には本書Ｐ84に描写されている英国海軍のフリゲート艦、二層戦列艦、コルベート艦と多彩で風景色彩もとても素晴らしく気に入っています。この頃の帆船がお好きな方なら気に入って頂けると思いお勧めです。

A beautifully illustrated hardback follow-up volume to “The Marine Art of Geoff Hunt”; I bought this just when it was published – good luck in finding it at a reasonable price now.Filled with large colour plates of his paintings with a fair number of drawings and sketches, this volume provides good insight into how Hunt goes about his work, with examples of working research drawings, photographs, preparatory work and finished paintings; the work isn`t restricted to historical vessels or even maritime subjects either – Hunt is a versatile painter (anyone acquainted with The Artist magazine will be aware of that fact) and there are a few landscapes included too.A fine, instructive and pleasurable book to leaf through for artists and shipping enthusiasts alike.
