Excellent Guide for training a well mannered dog beyond basic obedience
Even if you are not interested in actually receiving a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award or title for your dog this is a good book to read.I'll tell you why. This can serve as a guide for what you should be training your dog, and how your dog should behave. Every responsible dog owner that wants a well mannered dog can use this as a guide. For example, most people know to teach their dogs , sit, stay and come. That is a great start. This book and the tests required for CGC go beyond that. For example, teaching your dog to behave around another dogs and being handled by a stranger. If you want to know everything to do for your dog so that it is an all around "good dog". I recommend you get this book and use it as a guide.

Must Have for all Dog Owners!
This book is a how-to guide for teaching the ten skills necessary for dogs to pass the American Kennel Club's (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. The author is the Director of the CGC and S.T.A.R. Puppy Programs for the AKC and therefore has a wealth of knowledge to share with dog owners who are interested in having a well-behaved pet.I found this to be an easy-to-read, very informative book for dog owners. It not only explains what the skills are, but WHY they are important, and step-by-step instructions on how to achieve them. It includes color-coded insets with special tips. Although the book emphasizes the skills, it also provides more depth about preparation, next steps and different canine personalities. The book is well-organized with separate chapters for each of the ten skills, plus additional chapters on being a responsible dog owner, locating a training facility, special applications of the CGC (such as Boy Scouts badges, 4-H Clubs, and Therapy work), and other activities you may want to try with your dog. I particularly liked the chapter on Supervised Separation, as that can be a tough challenge for some dogs.I enjoyed reading the book and believe it achieves the author's goal of teaching dog owners how to have a well-mannered dog. As a breeder and trainer of labrador retrievers and pet parent of 6 dogs myself, I recommend Citizen Canine for all dog owners, from first-time to experienced owners.Janet Makarick-Roberts,Whispering Pines Farm, Keyser, West Virginia.

Disappointed
I thought that this book would give me insights I could use to improve the quality of training my dog. That was not the case. This book covers good skills to develop in your dog, but not clearly how to. Spend your money at the trainer, and the time with you furry friend.

Every dog should do this!
Every dog should train for the Canine Good Citizen title. It's just basic obedience, but does take time to master. The book has some good tips for owners.

The book is great but I was unaware that I would be charged duty at the door. I thought there was no duty on books anyway.
