No campaign mode.
I would have liked a complete campaign, not just a series of showpiece battles.

A very good game for Civil War buffs.
This games is certainly challenging and involves some real strategy. It has nice graphics and good extra features. I would think that most people would enjoy the game. I would highly recommend it to any Civil War game buff or those who like military strategy games that are played out in real time with real historic scenarios.

Best graphics in a Civil War strategy game!
American Civil War: Gettysburg is much more fun than reviewers typically give it. Compared to other video games, Gettysburg is so far the most realistic in terms of graphics and game play. You can hear the bullets whiz by when you zoom into the battlefield, guns crackling, and men screaming as they are shot or in a fight hand to hand. Morale is negatively affected by casualties taken and positive by making more of the enemy rout (among other things). The game also takes into account the terrain to your advantage: putting your men behind trees provides them with cover or a hill/elevation advantage over the enemy. Fortifying is also a possibility in determining your chances of success or defeat. The game works as you determine your moves in a battlefield while the computer does the same. When you are done with your turn you end it and the game begins to turn into a cut scene as your men follow orders while the computer does the same within probably 25 seconds till the cut scene ends and you make your next move (as the computer does their next move as well). When the battle ends, you have the option of seeing the cut scenes into a "movie" and viewing your and the a.i. decisions in one video (pretty fun). The game also does not contain a lot of documents but it does have a cool gallery with paintings for the Civil War and a couple of photographs from the time period. Not a lot of information if you want more than just the game play of it and want the background of the war.Overall, the game is impressive, especially compared to the other Civil War games out there that people would recommend (Which are in 2D). I still have fun playing the game and doing the campaigns. The only downfall is that the game only focuses on Gettysburg (not surprisingly) meaning you can't command troops on a national scale; the player is only able to command troops from what they are already given (or buy in skirmish). The game would be better if given the option to play other battles and other campaigns made in the war, that's my only complaint!
