Nice, but short
Fun comic, with great story and illustrations... but kind of pricy for how short it is!

This is the... BEST... POSSIBLE... THING!
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic kicks off its new comic book series in a way that promises not to disappoint. Being a grown Brony and always hungry for good children's fiction, the very first issue makes me feel like I'm living the TV show and loving every moment of it.To kick things off, Katie Cook (the writer) has definitely seen the TV show and enjoyed it, because she already knows how to write about each character and incorporates some very witty humor into otherwise dark and scary storytelling. Andy Price is also a very talented artist. When I first saw his artwork I had my doubts because his designs of the ponies seemed a little too realistic. For example, the shine on Rarity's hair does not seem reminiscent of the TV series. But after reading the first page I quickly fell in love with Andy's style. I absolutely adored the exaggeration he put into each character's face and pose during the most intense moments. In short... Andy Price has a style of drawing that is perfect for this series. (I mean... come on! Did we honestly think the art style wouldn't change during transfer from animation to comic?)But I think most importantly, the writer, Katie Cook, draws the reader in with an epic story that ends on a high note, promising you'll devour issue #2 only as soon as you can get your hoofs on it. In issue #1 Queen Chrysalis has returned to Equestria and ponies all across Ponyville have begun acting strangely. As you might have guessed, there are changelings involved in this conspiracy. There is actually a fight towards the end that seems very similar to the finale of My Little Pony, season two. However, Katie Cook goes beyond what you'd expect by making THIS battle even funnier than the changeling battle from the TV series! Katie Cook proves herself good at both humor and action, which I think proves she was the right pick for this comic. This issue openly appeals to fans of all kinds by making every single pony important to the storyline. Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash and all the Mane Six are all together as a team (not a bad way to reintroduce us to them). The Cutie Mark Crusaders also play an important role as well. There are even tons of cameos for those people who pay attention to the details. Octavia, Vinyl Scratch, Doctor Whooves, Snowflake and Derpy all make background appearances. Altogether, this issue definitely celebrates the transfer from animation to comic in a way that wouldn't disappoint anybrony. But one part of the story that I'm not sure of, however, is the friendship lesson. There is nothing to suggest friendship continues to be magic in this issue, but that doesn't mean future issues won't bring it up. I just want to make sure that friendship problems continue being apart of the WHOLE franchise because I honestly believe that My Little Pony is a good influence on children and adults alike for the friendship lessons it teaches. In short, I remember the original TV series having a crew of people who were passionate about their work, which largely contributed to the awesomeness of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Right off the bat, you can tell the comic book has a crew with just as much passion behind it. If I could improve anything, I would ask Andy Price to maybe rethink his approach at times. Only occasional do the ponies look freakish because he's trying too hard to exaggerate their expressions, but that's not to say he's doing a bad job. Some of his draws of Queen Chrysalis are truly terrifying; which is good! But all around, the effort of the entire creative team shows! So in the end, what do I want the comic to become? This is a question I ask for the comic book's long-term success. One of the reasons I'm excited for the comic book is because the animated series won't last forever. Seriously... I hope the TV series goes on for ten seasons. But honestly, comic books are known to have longer life spans than TV shows. Sonic the Hedgehog, for example, had a TV show back in 1993 with a comic book of its own. After the TV show was canceled the comic book has since continued going and has even expanded where the show left off. I hope the My Little Pony comic book can continue to be everything that the TV show is and, if it should come down to it, continue carrying the torch for the series and keep it alive in our hearts. But until that unfortunate day should come, I love both the animated series and the comic book together as just two parts of one giant story.
