Limited 180gm solid red virgin vinyl LP pressing. Includes four bonus tracks. Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs is an album released by Marty Robbins on the Columbia Records label in September 1959, peaking at #6 on the U.S. pop albums chart. It was recorded in a single eight-hour session on April 7, 1959. The album is perhaps best known for Robbins' most successful single, "El Paso", a major hit on both the country and pop music charts. It reached #1 in both charts at the start of 1960 and won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording the following year. Marty Robbins Favorites
Marty Robbins doing a great job with his most familiar songs. Album contains most of the songs that his fans would know (e.g., El Paso, The Big Iron on His Hip, and some other renditions of the same caliber. Definitely a worthwhile purchase for fans of country and western music in general and Marty Robbins in particular.

One of the great American recordings ever. No kidding.
Forget country -- there is none of it on this album. This is western music, music that celebrates the cowboys and outlaws of the Old West. It is one of my favorite albums ever, and while it may or may not be the greatest in its genre, I think it's safe to say it's certainly one of the most beloved western records of all time. It definitely deserves that reputation. They say that Marty Robbins -- perhaps the only real famous son of Glendale, Arizona -- recorded this album all in one day, on April 7, 1959. If true, that was a very productive day indeed for American music. "El Paso" became a wildly successful crossover single, but really the whole record is fantastic. The beautiful solo guitar fills by session musician Grady Martin are definitely one of the most important keys to the record's atmosphere and success. One thing I would recommend is programming this CD or MP3 download to play in the order it was originally intended to be heard. The 1959 album went as follows: Side 1: 1. Big Iron 2. Cool Water 3. Billy The Kid 4. A Hundred And Sixty Acres 5. They're Hanging Me Tonight 6. The Strawberry Roan Side 2: 1. El Paso 2. In The Valley 3. The Master's Call 4. Running Gun 5. The Little Green Valley 6. Utah Carol The music is good in any order, and maybe I just like it in the original order because that's how I listened to it as a kid growing up. Still, I really do find this order more satisfying. Highly recommended as one of the great American recordings from the second half of the 20th century. No kidding!

Beautiful soothing melodies of a time passing from our memories.
My grandsons love these songs as only the great Marty Robbins could sing them. Beautiful.

Great Quality Vinyl, Incorrect Song Listing
The sound quality is pristine, but the track listing is incorrect for what the sleeve and the vinyl itself lists on side two. It appears to be the track listing from most of the CD release reprinted on vinyl, but not having updated the packaging material: Side One: 1 Big Iron 2 A Hundred And Sixty Acres 3 They're Hanging Me Tonight 4 Cool Water 5 Billy The Kid 6 Utah Carol Side Two: 7 The Strawberry Roan 8 The Master's Call 9 Running Gun 10 El Paso 11 In The Valley 12 The Little Green Valley Still it's a great sounding record and I'm happy to have it as part of my collection.

Beautiful clarity, song order is wrong.
Beautiful clarity and sound, just like the description and reviews say, the background guitar for El Paso is reason enough to buy the record but Cool Water is impeccable as well. BUT!: the tunes are incorrectly listed on both the record labels and album cover. El Paso is listed as Song 1-Side 2 but it is actually Song 4-Side2. And there are two that are on opposite sides of the record. Not a big deal once you get used to it but come on! My two favorites are Song 4 both sides so at least I have that for consistency. This is the clear vinyl import, I wonder if the US black version is the same.
