Great resource for SAR canine training
If you have already certified your SAR canine, then this book is great to ensure that you are on track to train your dog and yourself as a team to be the best that you can be. If you are starting out with a new dog, Jeff's prior book with step-by-step instructions might be a better start. Either way, this book is a must for every SAR canine team (dog and handler). Even though Jeff specifically discusses trailing, there is great information related to scent-work in general. His focus on double-blind training is especially important to SAR. Best of all, you can see his ideas in action in his demonstration videos, posted online for free.

A very good book on k9 trailing
A very good book on k9 trailing. I have a previous book of his (I do not know him personally) and think this book is very well done. It can be read standalone, or in conjunction with his other books or any books on trailing work. Some techniques refer specifically to LE work, but most can be used by SAR dog handlers. I personally am a search and rescue handler. The concepts are pretty much the same. His overall philosophy comes through, and that was good, as it caused me to think about how to apply the concepts to my own work. So the book not only describes good dog handling techniques, it also causes the reader to think. I would recommend this book to any k9 handler, police or SAR.

Excellent book for any handler of a dog working scent/detection
Excellent book on the finer elements of training and deploying a trailing dog. Readers new to the field would benefit from starting with Schettler's previous book, K9 Trailing: The Straightest Path, and then immediately reading this book for the finer points. But this isn't just a book for trailing handlers. Any handler working a dog in detection or scent work will benefit from the discussion of training methods, reward systems, tiered training, and much more. Good work, Jeff!

Avoid mistakes and get this book!
Excellent book. This is the real deal from a real person that I'm proud to also call a friend. If you have any desire at all to learn the right way to trail a human being using dogs, this is the book for you.

Great Book, Horrible on Kindle
I hate to give this less than 5 stars because I love Jeff Schettler, but do NOT get the Kindle version of it. It is nearly impossible to read. Due to some formatting quirk, the font size is not adjustable and the only font provided is painfully small. I've read hundreds of kindle books (including Red Dog Rising, also by Schettler) and I've never run into this problem, but it really is a deal breaker. Great content, poor formatting

The format does not allow a font size adjustment and it is painful to read
This rating is based on the KINDLE format only. I just purchased and have only strained to read the first few pages. The format does not allow a font size adjustment and it is painful to read. Honestly will have to buy reading glasses to read this book and I have 20/20 vision. Considering asking Amazon for a refund and this is in no way a reflection of the content or the author but only the format.

The best and most honest book about the art of trailing
The best trailing book ever. This is advanced book and If you really interested in the topic I suggest to buy and read Jeff's previous books first. Especially "K-9 trailing. The straitest path"
