Works, without destroying your toilet
With experience over the years trying many different products, I've found that the only toilet cleaning solutions that are effective are those where the cleaning solution actually passes through the flush system (i.e., through the holes around the rim). The types that just clip onto the edge of the bowl are cute, but ineffective at actually keeping the toilet clean. There are many products sold that go in the tank which are effective at cleaning, however, they are harmful to the internal components and cause premature failure that can lead to leaks, and possibly property damage. The Fluidmaster system cleans effectively, without causing any damage to the toilet components. Its design is simple, yet genius. It consists of a small unit that connects onto the refill line, between the fill value and refill tube. The unit accepts a replaceable bleach cartridge and is completely sealed. When the toilet is flushed, water passes through the cleaning system, directly into the refill tube. This water passes through the flush holes and into the bowl, allowing the cleaning solution to be evenly distributed without any of the solution entering the tank. With this system clean water from the tank is used to flush, followed by the water with cleaning solution as the toilet refills. They claim that the bleach cartridges last approximately 3 months and I imagine that depends upon the amount of use. Unlike the bleach tablets you put directly in the tank which will continue to dissolve even without use (and thus the bleach content gets stronger and stronger), the Fluidmaster cartridges only get used when the toilet is flushed. This is by far the best cleaning system I've seen. It's simple, affordable, and effective. If you hate constantly scrubbing toilets, you may want to get this. We tried it in one of our toilets and it worked so well we bought three more. Oh, and if you're worried about remembering to change the cartridges, Fluidmaster has a website where you can sign up for reminders (and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to sell you the refills as well.) You can also get these on Amazon Subscribe and Save at a good price. That's what I did, so when they show up, I know it's time to change them. Also, as a side note, I did try buying chlorine tablets and using them instead of buying the replacement cartridges, as many others have done. While this option may be slightly less expensive, I've found that not to be a good option for several reasons. First, the chlorine smell is unbearable, even if I used only 1 tablet instead of two. Using bromine tablets would probably be better for that issue. Secondly, the chlorine tablets continue dissolving inside the cleaning system, even when the toilet is not used much. I had put 1 tablet in one of the toilets that we do not use much and after a week or so I flushed it and the smell was at toxic levels. I removed the cartridge to inspect and it had mostly dissolved and the fumes nearly killed me. The Fluidmaster refills do not seem to have this problem, as I've inspected all 4 of our toilets regularly while using them over the past year and find that those that are not used much stay intact, while those used more often dissolve faster. This is better as they remain effective for much longer in most of our toilets and I only have to replace the ones that are used more every 2-3 months. I'm not sure what's different about the tablets in the refill cartridges, but I've found it better to just buy them less often than trying to keep up with the chlorine tablets. I can say that our toilets do stay much cleaner using this system, so it has been worth the investment.

Very Easy to Install--Works Great!
I just bought this Fluidmaster cleaning system to replace an older system I had that uses pellets. Although that system was a bit cheaper to run, it was hard to dispense the pellets without touching them--whereas the Fluidmaster cleaning compound comes in a sealed cartridge. This system is VERY easy to install and works great--even though I was attaching it to a non-Fluidmaster toilet valve. Here are a few things to note based on many of the reviews I read: I HAVE A NON-FLUIDMASTER TANK VALVE AND THIS CLEANING SYSTEM WAS VERY EASY TO INSTALL! 1) You have to make sure to TURN OFF THE WATER VALVE TO THE TOILET BEFORE YOU BEGIN! If you try to change ANY toilet tank part with the water still on, you WILL get sprayed. (FYI--the water shut-off valve will be at the end of the pipe coming out of the wall below the toilet tank. it will have a short hose attached to it that runs up from the valve into the bottom of the tank that connects to the tank valve. Turn it to the right to turn it off and to the left to open it.) 2) There are only two connection points for this system: A) The tube that is attached to the upper part of box is the "intake" connection. (You'll know it's the UPPER part of the box because this is also where the cleaning cartridge is installed.) This "intake" tube is attached to the nipple on the top of your tank valve--that long, skinny plastic tower that brings in the water that fills the tank and also controls how much water comes in.) B) The tube that is attached to the bottom of box is the outflow tube. It takes the water that has entered the box through the intake tube, that then flows through the cleaning cartridge, and comes out here to go into the toilet overflow tower. This second tube actually comes out of the bottom of the cleaning box and then is re-routed so it goes back up long the side of the box so it is ready to be attached to the overflow tower in the middle of the toilet tank. Without this re-routing, the outflow tube from the box would essentially be floating free in the tank. 3) It is possible that in order to ship the cleaning systems, that outflow tube that descends for the bottom of the cleaning box is drawn too tight and might be slightly pinched. To alleviate that, just pull slightly on the left side of the of that outflow tube. That left side of the tube will move down a little adding some length to the tube and eliminating any pinched areas in the tube. 4) Slip the cleaning box on to the back edge of the tank so that it is a couple inches to the right of overflow tube (that tower in the middle of the tank). 5) Attach the the free end of the cleaning box's upper intake tube to the nipple on the top of the tank valve (that long skinny tower that lets the water into the tank--the one you turned OFF the water to in step 1). (You might need to cut the rubber intake tube from the cleaning with a pair of scissors to get the length right, but once you've attached the box to the back of the tank, pull the intake tube toward toward the intake tower nipple and snip off the extra tubing. If you snip off too much, just push the cleaning box toward the intake valve tower to make up for that extra space. THIS CONNECTION WITH THE INTAKE TOWER NIPPLE WILL BE TIGHT!! IF IT WASN'T TIGHT, IT WOULD LEAK!! IT MIGHT TAKE SOME FORCE TO GET IT ON, BUT THIS IS NOT PECULIAR TO THE FLUIDMASTER SYSTEM--ANY SYSTEM WITH A TUBE--AND ALL OF THESE HAVE TUBES--WILL REQUIRE SOME FORCE. IF YOU CANNOT GET IT ON, REMOVE THE WHOLE SYSTEM FROM YOUR TOILET, TAKE IT TO A FLAT, HARD SURFACE, AND ZAP THE END OF THE RUBBER TUBE WITH SOME HOT AIR FROM A HAIR DRYER--ONLY A FEW SECONDS, OTHERWISE YOU Will MELT THE RUBBER AND HAVE TO CUT THAT MELTED PART OFF! 6) Once you have attached the box's intake tube to the water valve tower nipple, connect the box's outflow tube to the tank's overflow tower with the included clip (or, if you have another type of overflow tube other than Fluidmaster, you can attach that tube accordingly.) Don't forget to turn the stare to the toilet back on!

Best cleaner I've ever had!! Works like a charm!!
Have always used the drop in tank tablet cleaners but decided to give this one a try. Was fairly easy to set up and install although very much depends on the kind of system you have in your tank so research that first. I had to use a different hose for part of it because the one provided was just too short based on how I had to hang the system and where the connections were. After figuring all that out which only took a few minutes everything worked perfectly. Some have said they smell chlorine a lot from this unit, I myself did not at first. After a few days you sometimes might catch a very slight hint of it for a second or two and that's it. Nothing horrible whatsoever. It works like a charm and kept the Bowl cleaner than anything else I had ever tried. The only downside I can see from this, depending on your point of view, is the cost. You do have to replace the filter and it is fairly inexpensive but maybe not over time. As many have mentioned there is a way to alter the unit so that you can use much cheaper replacement tablets without having to get a whole new filter. It is solely because of this reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Works better then any other toilet bowl cleaner
I've used many different toilet bowl cleaners in my day, all with very little success. Most might tint the water, keep it a bit more clean, and give it a scent. But this is the first one that actually did the job of regular manual bowl scrubbing. Our main problem is scum/mineral buildup around the water line in the bowl. I compared this directly with 3 different methods to see how well it worked, used in our main floor family toilet. 1) Drop-in blue toilet tank cleaner. This did very little to keep the buildup down. Within 2 weeks there was a noticeable line and it needed scrubbed. 2) Scrubbing bubbles automatic cleaner. This helped somewhat, but there was still slow buildup and certainly within a month it needed scrubbing. 3) Clorox toilet wand gel cleaner. This also did very little to keep the buildup down. Lasted less then two weeks. All of them did decently to keep the water looking clean and a "fresh" scent. However wasn't really what I was looking for. Now the results of this unit... In our heavily used family bathroom - this unit lasted an amazing 3-4 months before it ran out of the cartridge, and the results started to become evident. The whole time it not only kept the water/scent clean, it kept the buildup in the waterline completely gone! I did not have to scrub the toilet once or apply any additional cleaner to it at all. Gone are the days of weekly scrubbing the nasty toilet! This is truly a great product. I hooked this up in line, and in combination with ONE2FLUSH Dual Flush Toilet Conversion Kit Bonus Pack with new improved handle design, Better Fill water saving fill valve 3 St. Steel Bolts,Tank Bowl Gasket. Convert existing toilets to efficient dual flush toilets that Exceed Green Plumbing Codes. , it connected easily, and it works great. I would definitely recommend the Dual Flush kit, it saves a lot of water. So far I've only used the bleach refills, currently testing out the blue refills, and then will look at the green/biobalance to compare them all. I do have a septic tank, its aerobic and my final stage treatment before discharge is also chlorine. Still it's best to minimize the amount of bleach put in for the main tank bacteria to survive. However, the very minimal amount this introduces is not a problem (especially when compared to bleach and cleaners from everything else), and its certainly not a problem to my ground at final discharge. Just stating on how I'm not buying into their "biobalance" refill too much. I definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for the best possible toilet bowl cleaner out there. I can only hope the bleach refills go on sale and I can buy them in bulk, because they are a bit pricey when buying for 3 bathrooms everything 4 months.

STRONG DANGEROUS FUMES!!!!
I purchased this product in December, but didn't get around to trying it out until last week. I noticed right away the fumes were fairly strong but I thought it might dilute or calm down in a few days so I just kept the bathroom door shut with the fan on. I installed this in the bathroom across the hall from my bedroom where I work from home. Yesterday on my 30 minute lunch break, I left my bedroom door open on accident and someone in my family used the bathroom and didn't close the door all the way a few minutes after I went on my lunch break. When I came back from my 30 minute lunch break, my bedroom was so filled with fumes that my eyes hurt, my chest hurt, and I was coughing a little after 15 minutes of being in my room. I don't have the greatest sense of smell and I have allergies so it took me a few to realize what was bothering me. I opened the bedroom window and put on my fan to clear the bedroom out, took 3 showers scrubbing myself with rough cleaning rags to finally stop smelling like the bleach, although my hair still smells whenever I move my hair(shaking my head or scratching it, because my scalp itches too). I slept last night with my head near the open window. Thank goodness I did, because I woke up with my lungs still bothering me and my stomach hurting a bit, if I had left the window closed I'm nervous that I might not have woken up. I worked for a couple of hours but apparently the corner my desk is in did not air out enough, because my lungs started burning and my nostrils started hurting. I am currently sitting in my other bathroom with the shower on giving myself a steam treatment per advice from Poison Control, when I breathe deeply and exhale I taste chemicals on my tongue and my lungs, nostrils, and stomach are still bothering me. I am going to wash everything soft in my room, I think the fabrics are holding in the smell. But please be aware that ONLY 30 MINUTES OF COLLECTED FUMES has caused me all these problems. Ps. I have stomach issues and a low flow toilet so I while I knew there would be some fumes from the product, I was willing to try anything to avoid having to scrub the bowl all the time, plus most reviews said the fumes were minimal. The product did help keep the bowl clean for the week it was installed.

COMPARISON OF TOP THREE BRANDS
I am writing a review of three toilet cleaning systems I've bought here on amazon: Fluidmaster : Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based tablet. Cartridge is not meant to be refilled. Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom. Cartridge can be modified (I used a dremel) so it is easily refilled. NeverScrub : Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based crystal. Cartridge is not meant to be refilled. Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom. Kaboom : Does not use a cartridge. Bromine tablet refill inserts directly by unscrewing a cap. No odor noticeable in the bathroom. All three of these systems work the same way and all are really easy to install. All of them put a toilet cleaning chemical (tablets or crystals) in-line between the water fill valve and the toilet bowl fill pipe. All of them prevent the chemical from getting into the tank water (so there is no damage to the plastic parts in the tank). All sell refills for their systems. All keep the toilet bowl equally clean for about 1-3 months depending on how often it is flushed. Amazon also sells Pool/Spa Cleaning Chlorine and Bromine tablets, which as far as I can tell do just as good a job keeping the toilets clean as the refills but at a fraction of the cost. I have tried all of the following, each of which provide enough tablets to keep all the toilets in the house clean for 10 years and they are all very cheap: Kem-Tek 177 : The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. The bathroom has a slight chlorine odor. Spa-Kem 267 : The tablets are too large to fit in the Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. No odor. Tropi Clear : The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. No odor. Chlorine and Bromine are fairly equal in cleaning ability. Chlorine has that chlorine odor. Bromine is broken down by sunlight. Which is why, on a sunny day, outdoor pools use chlorine. But at night, or indoors, or on a cloudy day, they use bromine since there is no smell. Summary. The Fluidmaster system works but the cartridges are expensive. To refill the cartridges easily requires a small modification with a dremel tool. The cartridge is too small for any tablets larger than 1 inch in diameter. The NeverScrub system also works but the cartridges are expensive. What I am using is the Kaboom system with the bromine tablets (either the Tropi Clear or the Spa-Kem 267 ) as they have no odor and clean just as well as the chlorine tablets.

Genius! Easiest way to keep toilet clean!
This is amazing! I have been struggling to find something that cleans my toilet automatically. We have really hard water here in Western Massachusetts, so get black gunk in the bowl holes. Have tried other tank or bowl devices, but they were either not safe for the Fluid Master tank components or just plain didn't work. This was as easy to install as they said (plus found a few videos on YouTube). I got 2 for each of our bathrooms and love the bleach clean scent when opening the lid. Genius! Make sure you tighten the cartridge as shown in the locking position. I had some water spraying out from under tank cover, but quickly reacted turning off water and then tightening. All good! Also, I would still clean the bowl from time to time with scrubbers, etc. (I like Scrubbing Bubbles flushable brushes), but this is a game changer.

Works wonderfully! Highly recommend
I really like this item. It was simple to install. It won't prematurely impact the toilet parts like a bleach tab will. I do not smell any bleach coming out of my toilet or any general overpowering smells. I will be buying one for my second toilet shortly
