Q: Ive never built a server/nas before Ive always bought plug and play nas's what else do I need to buy to make this work?

Q: What drives do you recommend to use in the hot swap bays?

The hot-swap bays were designed to fit any 3.5" or 2.5" SATA/SAS drives so we don't have any particular recommendations. Your choice should be based on what you'd like to do with the system. So for example, if you are building a NAS that is to be running 24/7, then you should choose drives that were designed for NAS duty. If you were looking to build a rendering or video editing system, then you should definitely choose the fastest drives you can afford.

Q: What is the max drive size that can be used with sata interface ? I want to use 14Tb drives in this. Thanks

There are no limit to the drive capacity that you can use with CS381. However, you should double check to make sure your operating system and other hardware such as motherboard or SATA card can support 14TB drives.

Q: Cs381b micro-atx: from the pictures, it looks like the two rear fans are wired into the chassis. are they removable? i'd rather install noctua fans.

They are. They are standard 120mm fans. They connect directly to your MOBO or fan controller card,
