FANTASTIC READ
This is not the type of novel that I usually read but I ordered it because it takes placeon a Navajo Indian Reservation and it was an interesting premise. It turns out thatI couldn't put this book down. The writer is excellent at keeping you on the edge of yourseat at certain points during the story and her characters are totally believable. You careabout them and that's what good writing is all about. The picture on the front covercertainly helps with that too, ladies, because "Jimmy" is gorgeous!

Amazing! I don’t have adequate words for just how great!
I did something I almost never do; I purchased a book I read on KU. I felt like I needed to leave the author a tip. It is the rare book that makes me realize I rate books too highly. I need to have a sixth star that I only give out once a year or less. This book would definitely get that 6th star. This is the best book I have read in a long, long time. This is a modern book (so please do not give it a lower rating if you were expecting a historical plot). It takes place on an Indian reservation. Our heroine is a very blonde, research scientist from Minnesota who is studying plants and soil. Our hero is a former Indian Rights activist who, after spending 6 years in prison, has lost himself and his desire to live. This story draws you in from the first page and never lets you go. The journey begins with Jimmy about to shoot himself when pounding on the door of his remote cabin in the dessert stops him. Our heroine runs out of gas in the middle of no where and stumbles upon him. The action never stops. I could just not put this amazing book down and read it in one sitting. The writing is perfection. The dialogue feels so real. The plot is original and interesting and is filled with so many characters that you get to know. We have action, mystery, romance. Really this is reading perfection.I want to read more from Judith Schiller. It is hard to find out much about this author. Her last book was written 6 years ago. I will definitely read that one as well. I just hope I do not have to wait until 2025 to read another! If the author reads this, can you open an author’s page so that I can follow you? When you do write another book, I don’t want to miss it! Also, may I make a request? Can you give us John’s story in Alaska? I would like to see more of that wonderful character.I just cannot recommend this book enough. I told my husband he would enjoy reading this as well! So, if you enjoy character-driven, action-packed fiction that ends happily, this is the book for you!

Pretty good book
Ok I thought this was a pretty good story. The caricatures were great too. Being that both main characters where very hardheaded and strong willed I was surprised that they would have gotten together. Loved there dry since of humor. Tayhoe was my favorite with the humor. The different areas on the Rez Kara and Tayhoe traveled to for her research sounded like a place you wanted to see too. I really liked the name Tayhoe and thought it fit better as a first name rather then Jimmy. It gave more strength more athletic caricature to his personality, of who he was, the mighty, noble Indian warrior. The name Jimmy just don't scream "strong Indian heritage" just sounds like a little boys name and I didn't think it fit his caricature. I comment on this every time I see this in the Native American stories I read, indigenous people DO NOT wear costumes. Traditional clothing is called Regalia. Costumes are what is worn at Halloween or to parties, etc. I wished there would have been more written on Kara and Tayhoe's romance though. To much stuff going on and not enough of their love story going on in this story. Not that I would have changed the rest of what happened, but also had more about Kara and Tayhoe's romance. Yes I recommend this book.

A great story teller.
A very entertaining read with two strong protagonists from different cultures both attracted to and suspicious of each other. Their improbable love story is woven with detailed descriptions of the canyons, mesas, plants and wildlife of the hot Arizona desert. Jimmy Tayhoe’s dog Koot and his horses Loco and Nizhoni figure prominently in the narrative and are essential in the successful conclusion of the novel. I enjoyed the ironic humor and authentic slang as well as the anger, confusion and tenderness in the characters dialogue. Although Jimmy’s Apache Navaho and Kara’s white culture seem to be at odds, their strongly held convictions and beliefs make them two of a kind. Add the element of the struggle between the indigenous people and the government and large corporations, this story has action and suspense and a special mystery. Also enjoyed The Other Side of Hurt by this author.

This just became one of my FAVORITE books ever
Read this in 24 hours and absolutely love it. Tayhoe has everything I want in a story - two people from different worlds, a conflict that’s bigger than both of them, danger, a wonderful supporting cast that I hope will get their own books soon (Danny, for one), and beautiful writing all set in the Navajo reservation. Schiller took my heart there and more.Updated to add that the paperback is beautiful.

Great story! I loved the characters and how they were skillfully described in detail. The injustices of Native Americans and many of their thoughts and feelings were revealed. Suspenseful, romantic, and filled with raw emotion with the hope of redemption. I could not put this down until the end! There are many things that can be learned in this story! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a true-to-life story!!!
I loved everything about this story. Jimmy and Kara, the protagonists, are broken people who come together, not to fix each other, but to travel the journey together. Their relationship is greatly tested. I am pleased there was a good ending.
