Unique bookcase
NOTE: There is a large manufacturer's sticker on one of the panels. I made the mistake of ripping it off, thinking the sticker wasn't a true 'glue' -well, it ripped off the fake laminate paint - so now there's a big white scratch patch. If you use this vertically- no problem: The sticker's on the bottom. But I use mine horizontally, so now I have to figure out how to conceal this.Shipment: this purchase took a much longer time to deliver than any other Amazon purchase. It took nearly the full 10 days from purchase to receive. I was a bit disappointed, but it wasn't advertised to be any speedier.Materials: I would NEVER pay the full price listed for this bookcase. This is cheap pressed wood with a fake finish. I'm ok with that - I wanted something cubicle and modern - didn't expect a "real wood" look. At the same time - these materials would not be worth any more than the $156 or so I paid.Packaging: Weighs 66-70 lbs. Heavy, but manageable. What's notable is the packaging - the manufacturer took the time to package extra support around each corner, which helps ensure the contents won't be damaged during shipment. As a result, it took quite awhile to get the package open, but I was impressed with this extra detail.Appearance: Other than materials being cheap, I love the design. It's a large bookcase, but it's visually interesting - same as the picture.Assembly: I thought it was easy. I had an electric drill, which I've never had with previous assemblies. (Wow what a difference!) I'm a smart but NOT construction-savvy woman, and I had it fully assembled in about an hour and fifteen minutes. If you take time to lay everything out, understand the instructions, and follow them step-by-step, it's pretty darn easy. All the pieces are labeled, so it's easy to map them to the instructions.Only exception: One of the (last) pieces had incorrect pre-drilled holes. It was supposed to be a bigger hole for one of the bigger screws (not sure what type it is- dowel?), but instead it was a small hole. So... I had to drill it myself. I checked about 4-5 times, to see if I made an error somewhere, but I can't see that I did. What I'm using this for: I have this laying on its side, as an entertainment center in my living room. I have a cable management issue, but this is otherwise a perfect fit and looks great. I have a brand new 46" LCD flat screen sitting on this bookcase - I'm a little nervous to have a $1,000 TV sitting on top of a bookcase that wasn't designed for this use, but the TV and base weigh no more than 40 lbs, so it's probably (probably?!) not a problem.I'll probably secure the bookcase to the wall with a couple of L brackets, and will probably drill the TV base into the bookcase - just to make sure nothing moves. So as long as the shelves don't buckle, it should be ok (I hope!).Overall: Very happy with the purchase.

Scratches Easily But Looks Great
The hardest part of assembly was getting the darn thing out of the box! Took me more than 20 minutes, no kidding. Beyond that, it's time-consuming (a little under 2 hours for me), but very simple, like Ikea furniture. Just screws and dowels and you don't need power tools. It's darker than it appeared on my monitor (almost black), but the shape looks the same. It feels sturdy and looks great, but be aware that you REALLY need to put this together on a rug or other soft surface... I have wood floors and it's so big that I didn't have a rug long enough to put under the whole thing as I assembled the pieces. As a result, I managed to scratch up one side quite a bit while I was assembling it, so I couldn't turn that side face-out. Okay, so that went against the wall, but then the configuration was the opposite of what I wanted, so I tried to turn it upside down, but found that the "bottom" was now scratched up from my dragging it over in place. That was frustrating and could have been solved if (a) I had a rug under this the whole time, and/or (b) I had someone to help me carry it into place so I didn't have to drag it.So as it stands, it looks very nice, but I can never turn it any different direction from the single scratch-free side it's now on. And I have to hope that it withstands normal use and doesn't get scratched whenever anyone puts something on top of it.I have it horizontally under a long window, and it gives a classy, modern look to my office space.

Sturdy and looks nice
This bookcase looks great. It's fairly heavy and seems quite sturdy. The assembly instructions are a little confusing, as you start building from the center and build out, but if you watch your board placement and orientation carefully then you should be fine. I was a bit concerned about the color and finish based on other reviews, I have no complaints. The finish on my unit is a dark brown that is darker than most furniture that is labeled with an espresso finish. It matches the picture quite well. It also does have a simulated grain pattern on it that looks nice. I'm not sure if I got lucky or if the manufacturer changed their policy on the sticker on the bottom. My unit had no sticker on the bottom. The only stickers on this unit were labeling which part was which. After assembly only two of those small stickers were visible, and they both came off fairly easily without any chemicals.Because of the materials used, the parts don't all align up perfectly and some of the parts are recessed over 1mm compared to the other parts, but it isn't a major flaw or that visible. I have quite a few books on this and many of them are heavy. If you're in earthquake country you should probably connect it to a wall so it doesn't tip during a quake.

LOVE. THIS. SHELF.
I love this shelf. I will start out with the obvious: it is made of plastic and not a high quality, pass-on-to-future-generations, can-take-a-lot-of-abuse piece of furniture. It IS a very nice looking, sturdy, functional, versatile shelf. I am using it on its side behind my couch to separate my family room from my dining room and it looks fantastic. It's pretty heavy so I put felt pads on the bottom, but even with them, it doesn't slide unless you want it to. The cubes are large and I have tall books in a few of them that don't fit on other shelves. The design is such that it could be used (on its side) as a tv console and would be certainly be sturdy enough. No wobbling or rocking. The color is very, very dark brown- almost black with a fauz wood finish. I have both black and espresso furniture and it blends with both. Assembly took under two hours with me doing it by myself, stopping for a snack, etc. The instructions are pretty good, but once start assembly it's self-explanatory. It comes with small stickers to cover the holes for the bolts and screws. At first I thought they were cheese but honestly once you put them on you won't see them unless you are looking for them. For the price this is an excellent product.
